New Child Benefit Claim

Hi my stepson has recently come to live with us full time and we have submitted a claim for child benefit, does anyone know how long it takes to process? We have never claimed anything before so unsure of process. I know the DWP will need to contact his mother to confirm he is now living with us, bit of a difficult situation she threw him out Confused not sure how we can prove he lives here if she denies it all. Any advice gratefully received.

I'm assuming that his mum currently claims it at the moment?
I would imagine that you will need to prove that he now lives with you although I'm not sure how or how long it could take.
Hopefully someone more knowledgeable comes along soon.

She will have to relinquish the Child Benefit to enable someone else to claim it. If you claim it when it is still in payment - it will be suspended till everything is clarified.

Yes his mum is currently claiming, the form asked for her details and contact number which we gave. All communication has broken down between DP and ex who has form for being awkward. I wasn't sure if someone had experienced this process, we have added DSS to the electoral role at our house but not sure how else to prove his residency.

@trickortrickier thanks I thought that would be the case. Not sure how we can prove his residency we have added him to electoral role.
