spent savings without realising

It started off with taking out a chunk for something I needed and that was meant to be that and then I was meant to replace what I spent over time. I then got into the habit of taking lots of regular smaller amounts out of savings when I go over my monthly budget and need things. I know I have no one to blame but myself.

Okay. What next then?

So either

  • your budget is too low and you can't actually live on the amounts you've set, so you need to adjust accordingly
  • you aren't living within your means and when you say you bought things you 'need' you actually mean want.

I am suspecting the latter only because your thread title is 'spent savings without realising', i.e. you haven't been tracking your budget closely otherwise you would have realised you'd been spending the savings.

Time to have a proper think about what led to this point. Better to have realised at the point where you've spent savings than at the point where you've run up debt. I think it's worth looking at You Need A Budget - many MNers, including me, swear by it. Even if you don't want to shell out for the software it will be worth reading the articles and understanding the mindset that can help you budget successfully.
