Invoice scam

We've just had an invoice for an inspection on a fridge freezer that we owned over a year ago and replaced because it broke during the hot weather. The repair company claimed that we called them out and they came to look at it on the day after we actually bought a new one. They want us to pay £70. We've told them we never called them out but they're insisting that payment is due. I'm so pissed off and convinced this is a scam because 1. We definitely never called them and 2. Why would we try and get it repaired after we'd already order a new one?

The weird thing is they know the make of the old freezer (which we had AO recycle).

Has anyone has anything similar? Husband is stressed and wants to pay it.

PS the invoice is for work supposedly carried out in July 2022. But they only sent it to us a week ago.

Ask them to send proof that they attended, they should be able to produce a job sheet at least.

Floofydawg · 02/08/2023 20:55

Yep have asked for that - thanks.

There’s a chance they got you mixed up with other people?

or did you look online for a quote and get duped into booking a slot?

for £70 they won’t take it to court- would cost them £100 to do so

Husband is worried they'll sell the debt to a dodgy debt collector.

It would cost them £35 to take yo to the small claims court, and I'd think the onus would be on them to provide proof of conducting a repair. I wouldn't pay it. Did you call round any repair companies when the old freezer started malfunctioning, or have you used this repair company before?

Floofydawg · 02/08/2023 21:02

It's a repair company we've never even heard of. And I'm convinced we didn't even try and get it repaired because it was 9 years old and we knew it was on its way out. But because it was such a long time ago they've got us questioning ourselves.

The supposed visit was for the day after we ordered the new one.

I doubt very much they could sell anything on to a collection agency. There's no credit agreement or contract for a start. Maybe speak to Citizens Advice if they keep harassing you, but don't be bullied into paying something you don't owe. Every time I've had an appliance repaired I've had to sign a work sheet from the repair company, so demand they produce evidence for their claim.

Ok, thanks.

Please don't panic, they will write this off after you stick to your guns.

Just keep repeating to them:
Dear Credit control,

Please be advised that this invoice is in dispute and was issued in error. We have no record of a repair and did not call your organisation to request one. Please issue a credit note by return.

Check phone records to see if you called them or they called you during that time-frame if you are unsure if you had any contact with them at all.

But definitely don't pay the invoice as PP have said.
