I’m not looking at the list. I’m enjoying my Schrödinger’s Premium Box Day where I both have and haven’t won £100K

Imtoooldforallthis · 01/09/2023 11:37

Apologies if this has already been asked, but what is the maximum you can win before they contact you in person. Just wondering how much I could win tomorrow if I've not been already been contacted. If that makes sense.

boatgirl81 · 01/09/2023 11:46

I might be wrong but I thought they would only contact you in person if you win the top prize?

thecatsthecats · 01/09/2023 11:49

God, you're all so greedy looking out for Agent Million.

I will be perfectly happy to accept 100k.

Re: notice, it partly depends on whether you max out your holdings. They have to do some due diligence before they dole out supersized wins. I won 10k, and I went straight into my account, but that was still well under FH.

I've got £3,000 going spare, is it worth investing in premium bonds, what's the most I could possibly get back?

They have a guaranteed growth product on there paying 6.2%, I'd go with that with 3k. You're only likely to win a prize once every 7 months on 3k, and it's most likely to be 25 quid.

As soon as my holdings stop paying a min 4%, I'm shifting them out to the level where I should win occasional prizes but get the guaranteed interest elsewhere.

I like it. 😂. I'm doing this too!!

OneFrenchEgg · 01/09/2023 12:01

I have heard that if you have chosen prize reinvestment in bonds then it shows in the pending balance earlier but I've never tested it as I'm at FH so can't reinvest

I think this was a glitch one month where a few of us could see it a couple of hours before midnight when they update the app. Never been repeated.

Ok I gave in and looked. Something i noticed is that in the right hand column which is the amount purchased that 'won' as opposed to total holding, it's almost always £5000 plus. I only ever buy £100-£500 at a time usually monthly. Should I maybe wait and buy a bigger amount less often...

I often wonder that as I buy every month by standing order. However, NS&I say that the probability of winning is just the same. I think it's just that people with full holdings have a better chance of winning and they buy their bonds in larger amounts with a bonus or inheritance.

OneFrenchEgg · 01/09/2023 13:34

Maybe. I noticed sometimes it's a £5k block out of £15k , I'm tempted to save up and then buy a block next year

LuckOfTheDrawer · 01/09/2023 13:53

Every bond has the same chance of winning, irrespective of how many bonds were bought at the same time. Larger holdings just have a bigger chance of winning because of how chance works.

hellswelshy · 01/09/2023 15:33

Hmm not sure, I put a large chunk of money in February - over £20k and I've had zero luck since! One £25 since then boooo!

I haven't told my husband you can get the results early, he thinks they just arrive several days later by email.

This is revenge for when the bastard insisted on checking my lottery ticket, which as far as I was concerned was a winner, and RUDELY pointing out that it wasn't, a mere hour after the draw.

Clearly you need to LTB!

That always surprises me too - how many people have bought in blocks of £50k. I can i only transfer £20k max in any one day and DH only £10k. I also put £25 in first to make sure it was set up ok before transferring in some more.

Maybe they all sent in cheques?

Anyway makes it easier to check the lost to confirm I haven’t won big again.

nettie434 · 01/09/2023 19:08

That's what we'll tell ourselves NoNoNoYoureWrong. It's so much quicker to check the big winner list if you haven't got £50k in holdings!

And having an usual ending amount

More are doing that now if you look

So if I ever manage to save (unlikely) win enough to get £50k maybe I will do £49 997

Just did some number crunching of this month’s spreadsheet. Of the 90 holdings that each won £100,000 the average number of the holding is £16.8K. Of 180 holdings that each won £50,000 the average holding was £19.7K. Someone who bought a £5 bond back in 1968 has just won 50K!

PurplePositivity · 01/09/2023 19:51

I love seeing really old bonds winning, I like to think it's a long gone relative buying if for their grandchild when they were born.

I've not looked at the high winners but if I'm on there I will try not to let my win change me Grin

Sewingdufus · 01/09/2023 19:59

I have had a few PBs since childhood. Then I did a big top up 20 years ago. I’ve just put a bit more in, not on FH yet.

My question is - if I won what date would it quote? First investment or most recent?

I’m sure some with FH invest it all at once, but I’m sure others have done it gradually but the dates can’t show that detail.

The date would be whenever the actual winning bond was bought.
The issue comes when you sell a few bonds and buy more, as usually the oldest bonds are sold first unless you specify otherwise.
If you have sold some at some point without knowing that, it may well be that your childhood bonds are gone in favour of newer ones.

Sewingdufus · 01/09/2023 20:18

Thank you @InMySpareTime. Another question springs from your answer - if you only cash out some of your holding does it matter which bonds are surrendered? Surely they all have an equal chance of winning?

InMySpareTime · 01/09/2023 20:21

In terms of chances of winning, any bond is as good as any other, but some people like to keep certain older bonds for sentimental reasons, eg if the bond was a gift from a now-deceased relative.
