Two days I paid £550 to my credit card via card payment from my current account. As part of the authorisation process I had to log into my banking app to authorise payment which I did.

I got a message on my credit card app saying something along the lines of thank you for payment we will be in touch if any issues which I thought was odd as I don't think it usually says that.

Anyway, normally I get a transaction notification from my current account app telling me about the payment and it shows in my pending transactions/comes out of my available balance instantly. For some reason it hasn't. Credit card bank say they can see it waiting to authorise at their end, my normal bank say they can't see the transaction.

I don't know what to do! I don't want to do it again and risk it going twice as that would leave me in a mess but I don't want to occur interest charges for not paying my credit card!!

Try transferring a small amount eg £1.23 so you can check everything is ok.

pineflump · 28/07/2023 07:15

I've just done £5 this morning to try to push it along and it's worked but still no movement on the other one. They say now they had issues with card payments this week and it may or may not go through within a few days. What am I mean to do with that if I get interest charges!

If it's either the bank or credit card who have screwed up then you can claim the interest charges from them.
If they can't see it pending at the bank it does sound like it hadn't worked though from an auth perspective

pineflump · 28/07/2023 07:21

This actually happened to me a few months ago but it was a small amount of roughly £20'so I repeated the transaction as it wasn't showing on my banking app and it ended up duplicating and being taken twice

Oh sounds like an app problem (have you got the latest version ?).
Maybe call the bank again and see what's going on?

I'm just on the online chat to both banks now and neither are being helpful annoyingly.

CC is saying it will eventually go through as they can see it waiting to clear at their end
Bank is saying it's not there and to try again but I can't risk losing that amount twice!

Well I'd believe the bank more than the cc. Can you ask the cc to cancel the transaction on their end and then just repeat

How can the credit card cancel a transaction that the OP sent from her current account? It doesn't work like that

dementedpixie · 28/07/2023 08:12

@pineflump what sort of payment was it?

Did you go to the credit card and action the payment there by inputting your debit card number or did you go on the current account app and send it from there as a faster payment?

pineflump · 28/07/2023 08:13

No - I went into the app and entered card details to do a card payment

OP posts:
pineflump · 28/07/2023 08:13

If I do it again and it DOES go twice can I claim the over payment back?

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 28/07/2023 08:28

As its a card payment it might take a couple of days to show as coming out your account. Maybe you've entered a digit incorrectly or maybe it is just delayed.

Maybe for your next payment you should set up the payment on your current account app and send it via faster payments instead.

mondaytosunday · 28/07/2023 09:00

Not quite your current situation but it wasn't until I made a debit card payment through my credit card app on the day the money was due only to get a message AFTER I completed the transaction that debit card payments take a couple days to process (the transaction did show up in my bank app though). So I had to go to my bank app to make a further payment so not to get charged a late payment fee. I'll always do a bank transfer now rather than go through the CC app.

It sounded like the payment was initiated by the credit card hence it's showing as pendng authorisation on their side, so in principle they can cancel the transaction

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 28/07/2023 09:22

Is it Co-Op? They're aware of problems with payments this week. Very really helpful when I rang their Customer Services.

It wasn’t, the OP paid the credit card company through her bank account. The credit card company can’t cancel the transaction.
If the CC company can see it waiting to be applied, I’d leave it for another couple of days. Sometimes these things just take a few days.

pineflump · 28/07/2023 09:32

To confirm, CC is M&S Bank. I've asked them to cancel, they said they can't and to leave it a few days before paying again.

Current account provider can't cancel it because as far as they are aware / can see, there is no transaction to cancel.

I will give it a few more days then do the payment again by faster payments and pray that if the other payment does turn up, M&S refund me or I'll have to live off the credit card overpayment which id rather not do!

I always do card payment every month as in my head I thought I got some sort of payment protection doing it that way...

M&S will see that you always pay your balance in full. They will also see that you have rang them to query this problem. If the payment doesn’t go through and you need to repay it, then they should refund any interest incurred on your account. Don’t worry xx

Thanks for this! I actually got a text this afternoon to say a number of tech issues with card payments happened yesterday and to re-do the payment which I've done. Annoyingly the online chat say it's now showing as two payments ready to go. Hoping the original drops off and I don't need to them pester them to refund the overpayment. Only one is showing on my current account so fingers crossed! X
