Hi there - I am looking for a side hustle to make some extra money - I have signed up to be a secret shopper but need some other ideas!

@Crabapplecasey in my opinion, yes it is. Vinted is more straightforward (download the App to your phone) and the selling process is simpler. The also don't take any fees!

I use only Vinted for clothes now

I work full time in a school, admin not teaching.
I have a reselling business and buy things from Facebook marketplace, charity shops and car boot sales to sell on.
I do lots of research, pay tax on it and work really hard at it but it's worth it, I make around 1k a month, am sitting on probably 30k of stock. It can be as small or big as you want it to be, start with things you know and would buy second hand yourself and go from there.

Last question @Allice !
Where do you sell it on? Your items are lovely brands - I see some in my local
charity shop sometimes and often thought about buying to sell on.

Allice · 04/08/2023 08:31

I sell on eBay, I've had the odd go on Vinted but not done that well.
I do buy things on Vinted to resell on eBay.
Key is good photos, good honest description and good packing, I double box anything delicate and only use Royal Mail as evri seem to play football with anything I send.

TheOwlChronicles · 04/08/2023 08:38

You Gov are absolutely shit

I've just received my payout of £50. You'd think that was good .. but that's taken 19 months of the longest and most boring surveys imaginable

19 months!

reesewithoutaspoon · 04/08/2023 10:03

Agree about you gov. Having to earn £50 before you can cash out is rubbish. How much data do they get for free because people give up before then

Charcol · 04/08/2023 11:12

IF YOU HAVE A SKILL... you can teach it. via. lessons / tutoring. Youtube videos?

HollyB85 · 04/08/2023 11:32

I tried doing online surveys and all the typically popular ways of earning extra money from home, but never had a great deal of success.

I found it could take me an hour to complete 3 surveys for a measly £3/4. I've actually found that my efforts have been best focussed on saving on spending. Instead of using the time to try make money, I use it trying to save money, like looking for discount vouchers, and comparing prices. I've saved so much money by doing this, far more than I'd have earned trying these side hustle methods.

I used to be very lazy and would just buy the first thing I found, and would often use places like amazon for their convenience. But instead I find what I want, shop around, find discounts, and from this I'm much more savvy and better off for it!

anibendod · 04/08/2023 18:17

I disagree about Yougov. Yes, it is a slow burn if you are only doing surveys, but they NEVER screen you out. If you get invited to join their data sharing schemes (your tv subscriptions, banking data and internet browsing history), rewards are much more lucrative and you hit the £50 pay out threshold much quicker.

receipt scanning apps are another way to bring in a few £s. I can recommend shoppix and storerewards (you may have to join a waiting list).

TheOwlChronicles · 04/08/2023 19:33

I mean, there's a slow burn and then there's approaching two years to cash out!

And the surveys are so long winded

Radiodread · 04/08/2023 23:53

I do think a lot of these companies capitalise on women who don't know their worth. I do understand that some people can't leave the house or work outside, owing to inescapable caring responsibilities, but even then, there must be better-paid work than surveys. I hate the way they play into the whole 'bit of pin money' trope of the 50s housewife. Yuck.

Topcashback, quidco, etc, are a bit different. I think of them more like Tesco Clubcard points and other loyalty schemes, in that they are low-input and literally free money as long as you don't let their offers drive your buying decisions.

If you've a laptop, are reasonably numerate and not averse to a few identity checks can also do matched betting for a few extra quid. The signup offers can net you around £400 inside a month. Ongoing, I'm less convinced about the return for the effort required, but as a one off it's good, easy money as long as no history of betting.

Cashback.co.uk (formerly 20 cogs) is good also as a one-off, but I would not recommend doing the bingo/ gambling offers (or not many of them) as I found they didn't track or pay up, and it was a right ballache to claim them. And for god's sake use a new email and preferably burner or little-used mobile number as you will be forever plagued with spam for the sake of earning £150.

Tripolitripodder · 05/08/2023 09:26

Thanks for this thread, there are some ready good ideas on it.Going to have a look on Vinted and ebay this weekend seeing as it is tipping it down, and will see if I have any success.💰📦

LittleEsme · 06/08/2023 16:21

I've made £3.40 on Eureka and it's already telling me that every survey I click on is closed. This is for the 2nd day now. Frustrating!

I'd like to give the match betting a go but I simply don't understand it. I've tried to get my head around it in the past but failed miserably.

Radiodread · 06/08/2023 19:30

Matched betting is easy peasy. You can use one of the membership sites to guide you through the first signup offers. It tells you how to do it step by step. I’d never placed a bookie bet in my life before. Using decimal odds makes things about a million times easier.

Crepesandconans · 07/08/2023 20:49

I had an issue accessing eureka surveys for around 2 days, hopefully it was just a glitch cos I was fine again today.Fingers crossed it was just something their end cos I cashed out today with no issues.

Thanks @Crepesandconans , that's a relief. I've only earned a
Few quid, but I still would like to add to it 🤣

Tripolitripodder · 08/08/2023 07:51

I managed to list quite a few items on ebay at the weekend, and most have bids so fingers crossed for some much needed cash.🙏Do I have to wait for feedback on the items before I get paid as it is my first time selling does anyone know?

reesewithoutaspoon · 08/08/2023 09:07

Haven't done eBay for a while. But usually you don't post items until you receive the payment. They then leave reviews once they receive it.

Tripolitripodder · 08/08/2023 09:12

OK thanks.I know that they have to pay before I post the item, but my friend said that I don't actually receive the funds until I have got good feedback as I am new to selling.Does this sound true as obviously I need the money as soon as possible and hopefully the buyer will bother to give feedback iyswim x

ferretface · 08/08/2023 09:13

@Tripolitripodder sometimes with new sellers eBay puts an annoying hold on payouts, I think it's about a fortnight where they hold the money. It doesn't relate to feedback.

Tripolitripodder · 08/08/2023 09:16

Oh ok thanks.I mean I understand it is to protect people from being scammed, but I thought if the buyer received the goods and said they were happy,I'd get funds cleared quicker.Never mind,it will be money saved up I guess.I suppose when I have sold more things,I'll get paid faster.

BadSkiingMum · 08/08/2023 09:33

I have tried various things but came to the conclusion that the best way to earn additional money is by using your professional skills on a freelance basis. It took a while, but I eventually got a regular freelance gig that is quite well paid for the work involved. However, you have to not mind putting in a proposal and being rejected. I put in a proposal for my current gig a whole year before the organisation eventually came back to me and said they would like to take me up on it. They had initially said they weren't interested but circumstances changed.

However, I recently came to the conclusion that I would also like to do something fun that is nothing to do with my professional skillset. I have an Etsy shop that is quieter than the moon, so I am going to change gear and begin selling something completely different.

Eureka still tells me that every survey is closed. I don't understand it.

Forgetaboutme · 09/08/2023 22:44

I do a mix of matched betting and surveys. Matched betting gets me more money but i need my laptop. Surveys i can do on my commute. I just let the money build up till i need it. I use attapoll https://attapoll.app/join/nlnil

AttaPoll - Paid Surveys

Get paid to take surveys on your mobile phone or tablet.
