Debit card fraud

So recently had about £500 taken from my account, multiple transactions and in euros converted into pounds to places like Honos pay and Air wallet.

Bank refunded me no issues and said it would be passed onto Mastercard fraud team to investigate- far as my bank are concerned its done at their end and they have no say in what Mastercard does.
However have said that if they think the transactions are genuine then they reserve the right to take the money back.

The transactions weren't me obviously but im worried they will try to get out of refunding me! (Well ive already been refunded)

Has anyone heard of this happening? I can only find that if the banks refunded then thats it? Just dont want to use the money if theres risk of it being taken!

Stressed is an understatment!

TIA!

I've had similar just recently with a debit card. A transaction seemed not to go through on Google Pay so I did it again with the physical card in a hotel restaurant. The bank have refunded it but say they reserve the right to un-refund it if the merchant disputes it. So why refund it?? I could understand if it was going to take me over an overdraft limit or something similar but I'd rather not have the money back if they're gonna take it again.

When I had a dispute recently on my credit card (merchant had gone bust) I think they sort of treated the transaction as not there when calculating minimum monthly payment, but didn't actually refund the money until they were satisfied the merchant had indeed gone bust. Something similar would seem fairer, i.e. it doesn't count towards the overdraft limit but it isn't actually there in your account.

The bank have given me no timescale for investigating the problem - the credit card one took months to resolve. Have the bank given you a contact number for the Mastercard team?

The bank will only take the money back if it can be proven it was a legitimate purchase. People try it on all the time.

@tribpot no they didnt and havent even had an email or any messages that an investigation actually has been started! On person i spoke to said they give the retailer 60 days to dispute it but the transactions dont seem to be retailers, it seems to be like cryptocurrency or money exchange places, one I think was some phone company in south africa 🤦‍♀️

When you report fraud, they credit your account while they investigate it. If they agree it is fraud, then that’s it, they let you know. But if they decide it was a genuine transaction, they then notify you and re-debit your account by the amount.

So im even more confused this evening and dont know what to do now- so bank refunded me all the transactions and then tonight ive had some refunds from the merchants theirselves? I say merchants a lot of the payments went to cryptocurrencies or like phone top ups (i looked up some of the names)

I didnt contact any merchants, juwt the bank because it was fraud on my end, they werent from me- but what do i do now?
