Hello

Bit of a stressful time right now and really need some help understanding how UC and JSA works

i got made redundant last Monday 10th. I applied for UC and JSA on the same day.

i had my first UC this morning to confirm my identity. Luckily I have been offered a role just an hour ago, which I am starting on Monday.

please can someone explain what dates I’ll be paid from/to? My UC advisor said I’d be paid up until the date I am paid from my new employer… however I assumed I would just be paid up until Sunday, the last day of which I’ll be classed as unemployed?

UC works in arrears so when they look at what you've earned it will be what you got last month if that makes sense. Have they told you what your payment date will be? If so, your assessment period will be 7 days before that for mine gets paid on 19th of the month and my assessment period is the 13th-12th of each month

UC is calculated and paid monthly. It was set up like that to replicate salary. Each month in your claim is called an Assessment Period (AP). The first AP starts the day you claim so yours will run to 09th August.

Whether you get any UC at all will depend on when your new employer pays you. It might also be affected if you claimed before any final payment from the previous employer.

Each monthly payment calculation starts with what is called Max UC - in effect the amount UC rules say you need to live on. It will start with a Standard Allowance for you (and your partner if you have one). Additional elements are added for Children, Housing Costs (But only Rent) and also for ill health, carer reponsibilites etc.

Any earnings in the AP will result in UC being tapered by 55p for every £1 although, if you have children or a long term health problem you may get a Work Allowance - earnings you keep before the taper kicks in.

Income replacements benefits, like New Style JSA, are deducted £/£ from UC.

You might get some JSA irrespective of when you're paid but it will depend on how the dates amtch up.

Meant ot say you wait a week after the end of the AP to get a payment. So if your AP ends on 09 Aug payment will be on/around 16th.
