Universal credit managed migration thread

Anyone else waiting for a migration notice this year?
Looks like they are planning to move people on tax credits only onto universal credit this year but haven't released any detailed timetables about areas.
Thought it might be useful to share experiences and information on here for those affected.

Hi all
Where do I start.....literally?!
We have our migration letter and we intend to make a claim before the 24 Jan deadline when TC stops
I'm just a bit stressed about doing it all as I have so many questions about how, when and what ifs.
We foetunate to have more than the 16k cut off which I know is disregarded for the 1st 12 months but, someone mentioned there is a deduction for every £250 over that. Can anyone explain that a bit further?
I have also heard about the intrusion of your accounts possibly by UC; is this correct?
I have so many more questions which I feel easier asking to people in forum like this rather than helplines. Dont ask me why, maybe I'm just a people person. Lol
Seriously though, any input would be greatly appreciated.

Normally for every £250 over 6k savings that you have , you lose £4.35 of your monthly Uc amount so roughly £17 per 1k. Whether that deduction applies to all your savings when you have more than 16k I don't know, or just up the 16k after which ordinarily people's Uc claim would end.

DorisJoy · 19/12/2023 19:03

During the transitional period anything over £16k is disregarded. They deduct an amount between £6k up to £16k. It works out at £174 deduction per month. You do get a transitional payment too so still worth applying.

Much appreciated, that answers my question about the 'disregard'.
Do you know if there's any truth about the going into your account?

AIUI there is legislation going through Parliament that allows some level of access to accounts and/or obliges the bank to report certain things.

I'm still claiming tax credits and expected to have received the migration letter by now, but no sign of it. I got a generic flyer through the post a few months ago. When should I definitely hear from them by? Is it April 2024?

DorisJoy · 20/12/2023 01:55

I applied in October and gave them balance figures. They have not requested any statements yet. Although others have had to show statements.

Gaffygoose · 20/12/2023 08:29

We got our migration notice 2 months after receiving that flyer and it gave us 3 months to make the application (we're in the middle of that time frame).
By what I've read on here in different categories, that varies.

Barleymilk · 20/12/2023 13:35

I can't remember where I read it but next month Northamptonshire and Newcastle are being asked to move over, plus a couple more areas. This month is Bucks and Oxon.
I believe by March all areas will have received a migration notice.

Hi everyone. We got our migration letter a couple of weeks ago. I tried to apply today but when I answer the questions on one page and click on the button to go to the next page, it takes me back to the previous page. I have up after 20 minutes of going round in circles. Is it supposed to be this difficult? Also I'm dyslexic and hate forms with a passion.

There must be a key question maybe that you haven't answered so it won't let you move on ?

Bromptotoo · 27/12/2023 11:29

As @Babyroobs says it only does that if you've not answered fully, or at least the form's logic thinks that. Don't worry too much about timing - unless you're close to the migration deadline, though that can be extended - the form's set up so you can take your time and do it in instalments.

Which task are you getting stuck on?

If you call the Help to Claim service, run by Citizens Advice, they should be able to help you. If their agent is bamboozled as well then they can set up a three way call with UC to sort it out.

elliejjtiny · 27/12/2023 16:59

Thank you. Turns out it was the computer that has the problem so now I'm doing it on my tablet.

Angel0510 · 27/12/2023 21:40

So eventually completed joint claim for managed migration, husband works self employed full time, myself not working as have been sahm. So I understand that I have had to complete the "work requirements" questions and have to meet with a work coach, but they asked my husband same questions as if he's not working? He put self employed when completing form but was never asked about earnings... have we missed something or will he just provide these at a later date?

Bromptotoo · 28/12/2023 01:14

SE earnings will need to be reported as they arise in each monthly Assessment Period. Work related requirements for you will depend on age of kids.

Angel0510 · 28/12/2023 08:21

Ok. Thanks for that regarding husband. Kids are 14 and 16 but I do school run to avoid extortionate bus fare and also look after my 3 pre school grandchildren a couple of days a week.

Timeforanewnam · 28/12/2023 08:51

Has anyone moved over and found uc ok ?

we get £17 per week tc atm and I’m seriously thinking it might not be worth the stress .

dh works 45 hours pw and I work just shy of 30 …….. I just don’t see when we would fit in going for job centre interviews

I hate the thought of people looking through my bank accounts (not that I do anything exciting lol)

I might start the claim today as I’m running out of time.

Bemyclementine · 28/12/2023 10:35

I've found it fine @Timeforanewnam . The only main difference I've found is the monthly calculation. If your income fluctuates, your UC will too, month to month.

The online journal is brilliant, you get a very quick response - minutes sometimes, up to a couple of days.

Bromptotoo · 28/12/2023 10:40

@Timeforanewnam asked - Has anyone moved over and found uc ok ?

Never been on it myself but worked with a lot of people who have moved to it or claimed in the pandemic.

If you're both in 'ordinary' employment paid a reasonably regular wage or salary it should work at least as well as Tax Credits. It's calculated each month based on the actual earnings your employer reports to HMRC when they run payroll so much less risk of under/overpayment than TCs.

If you're both working now then I wouldn't expect you to need to go the the Job Centre regularly. You may need to go at the start of your claim to deal with ID or, if you're a tenant, prove your rent. There will be a Claimant Commitment to accept but I don't think that will require you to do anything more than 'keep in touch'.

If you want to know what you'll get, and quite a lot of working people are actually better off on UC, then use one of the on line tools like turn2us or entitledto. They're only as good as the info you put in but for most claims they're pretty good.

FocusOnTheFrais · 28/12/2023 12:09

I’ve just found this thread. I got very helpful replies on my own thread. I thought I’d post here to see if anyone has had a similar issue?

DH has set us up both separate UC accounts at the same time (online). There is no way to link them. We haven’t started the claim yet, just created the account.

How do we link them?

It’s a migration claim. Does anyone know at what point TCs will stop? Is it when we start the claim or is it when we have filled in all of the information and clicked “submit claim”.

I don’t think it will be a live claim until we hit submit but DH thinks it will start as soon as we pop information in and TCs will end.

Bromptotoo · 28/12/2023 12:39

Tax Credits stop when you submit the claim.

As regards linking the claims one of you needs a linking code to give to the other. This comes up during the application process under the 'to do' about relationships and who you live with. Whoever does that first should ask for a linking code. Give that to your partner who should opt for 'I have a linking code' (or similar words) on their application and insert the code in there.

What you need to avoid is both getting a linking code of your own as that will mess up the process!!

FocusOnTheFrais · 28/12/2023 12:55

@Bromptotoo Ty. That makes sense. DH is going to start the claim today and submit it at a later date when we have all of our documents ready.

Angel0510 · 28/12/2023 14:24

Well I keep thinking we've missed something as we weren't asked to provide any documentation. I don't work so mine was pretty straight forward, husband self employed but wasn't asked for any info regarding this. I completed my details first and was given a linking code. Then when my husband set up his account I gave him the linking code. Only part that confused us slightly is that it asked if I received benefits, I receive tax credits so I answered yes. Then when my husband completed his part, we also put yes to receiving benefits, tax credits, although they are paid to me ... I assumed that although it is paid into my account, we both claim them?

Bromptotoo · 28/12/2023 14:37

@Angel0510 have you got as far as first payment?

Angel0510 · 28/12/2023 14:41

It tells me when a decision will be made, 29th January, any payment to be made on 2nd February?

Bromptotoo · 28/12/2023 14:47

@Angel0510 OK so you've only just started your claim with your first monthly Assessment Period ending in late January?

If they're satisfied about your ID and any rent you pay then it's possible you won't need to produce any documents immediately. As your husband is Self Employed I'd expect there to be some checking that his employment is genuine and effective. He'll also need, unless he's paid through PAYE, to show his monthly SE earnings.
