Why was card declined?

My card kept being declined, I am in overdraft but not at limit by 200. Wages go in tomorrow, as it's Sunday no bills coming out. I'm not overdrawn every month it's just Friday I had to renew car insurance and tax.

I contacted bank and it was automated virtual assistant who said not frozen and just needed to reorder a new card. What's it mean? I'm confused if I need to worry or not? Never happened before.

What's the expiry date on your card? Could it have run out? Another thing I had once, I had a bit of dirt on the chip and it was being declined everywhere. It worked after I cleaned it.

Not out of date, but the card is very tatty. My partner borrowed it when at work so it's scratched and had to clean it couple times as he got it so dirty 😬

Is it being declined when using it in shop but not online? Mine did this, I did need to order a new one. Not expired but just tatty and neglected

Yes I transferred money instead, that was fine. But in shop and cash point declined.

From what you've said about cleaning the chip it sounds like the same problem I had with mine. I was still able to use card online and transfer while I waited for new card. Payments still came out too. Best order a new one

Can you not just add the card to your phone and pay with that ?

BarbaraofSeville · 18/06/2023 13:29

Is your overdraft still active?

But if you need temporary cash flow management it's better to use a credit card than overdraft as its free and banks see credit card use as good and overdraft as bad.

Just put some of your normal spending or things like car tax on a credit card and you won't need to use your overdraft.

Always good to have a second card anyway so you're not affected by random declines or any other banking issues.

How is the card getting dirty if it's just in someone's wallet the whole time

FawnFrenchieMum · 18/06/2023 16:26

Sounds like the chip is damaged and can’t be read.

LadyJ2023 · 18/06/2023 16:27

Probably needs a clean the amount of times I have to wipe hubbies after he has had it lol

Smallngrumpy · 18/06/2023 16:44

Were you trying to use contactless or chip and pin?
I have noticed that when I use my card as contactless, every so often it is declined as apparently you can only use contactless so many times before you have to enter your pin again.

This is correct but she also couldn’t use it at the ATM and the bank would have been able to see that as a reason

Licklebroondug · 18/06/2023 18:50

You shouldn't let anyone else use your card.

Throwncrumbs · 18/06/2023 18:54

Maybe your overdraft has been got less, instead of say £200, they’ve changed it to £100, happened to me once. Don’t live on an overdraft anymore as it’s easy to think you have more money than you actually do!
