Tax rebate

I know I am due a tax rebate this year as I have paid paye on my earnings as an agency worker. I paid over £1000 in tax last year but only earned £13000, so I have paid tax in excess of my personal allowance.

I know hmrc will eventually get around to sorting it but I'm just wondering if it will be expedited if I do a self assessment? My very old car is due an mot and service and I suspect it will be costly

My earnings were mostly through an agency and a six week period through local authority if that makes a difference

Are you working now and was the money earned in the last tax year. If you are self employed then it will get sorted when you do your self assessment, but remember if you are likely to be earning this financial year, then HMRC take payments on account for the following year. Your best bet is to ring HMRC and ask them. When I retired and knew I wasn’t going to work anymore I filled in a form online and got money refunded through bank account. If you are in a PAYE job then you should get a tax refund with your pay.
