Can someone leave you their house in their will but put a restriction on to say that the house can not be sold?

In very short yes but it's circumstance dependent potentially involving trusts etc and needs legal advice.

What is the situation for which you are asking?

You can be left an interest in the property while you are alive or for a specified time. You would not own the property yourself. Someone (trust/trustees) will need to own the property and be able to make decisions about the property.

My Dad had it in his Will that his house was not to be sold for a year to allow my Brother who lived with him time to decide what he wanted to do. He stayed in the house but paid myself and other sibling our share.
