car insurance when buying a new car (then selling old)

apologies for a really boring question.

New car arrives Thursday.

For various reasons too boring to go into we don't expect to sell current car for around a month - possibly longer.

I have been advised by current insurer (and I think previously did when we had a similar situation) change current car insurance policy to new car and get a separate 'temporary car insurance' for the old car for 28 days which can be renewed. I seem to remember this costing about £50 a few years ago but this time I have tried several sites and the cost is insane, not far off the same price I paid to insure the same car FOR A YEAR a few weeks ago (no claims or anything since then).

So now I'm thinking best to buy an entirely new policy for the car then cancel the original policy once old car is sold, minus proportion of time I've had it plus the admin fee of £45.

Any issues I need to be aware of with the above and/or any other ideas?

Thank you

I had this and the dealership paid insurance for 7 days on the car from date of pick up and that gave me the week to change my insurance over to the new vehicle. Did they not offer you this?

If not just use Dayinsure from Thursday for 48hrs or so and inform your insurance company to swap the vehicles. It's only a small admin charge usually?

Would your insurer's give you NCD on a second policy, or transfer it to the new one? If not, I would do as they suggest.

So what would your current insurer charge for you to transfer your current policy to your new car and take out temporary cover for your old car? I'm not sure why you're looking on other sites.

I’ve recently done this, but the overlap was only a few days. My old car insurer changed the details to my new car but kept my old car on a 1 month policy. It cost me nothing!

good point, the truth is I don't know because our new car isn't officially registered yet so it's a 'computer says no' situation. We are trying to get the dealer to sort this asap, agree this could be the best course of action

thanks this, dealership not mentioned anything but will ask now!

But in any case just checked dayinsure, is not cheap but is a lot cheaper than other quotes I got so thanks a lot for that
