Ridiculous price of car hire- U.K.

I don’t own a car, live in London and rent one a few times a year for stuff I can’t do by public transport . Was going to hire one next Friday for 2 trips to the dump. It’s usually been around £30 for a medium sized car for the day. They just quoted me £72! When I queried it they said I there’s a surcharge as it’s as weekend - apparently Friday is now the weekend. Weekday would be £52. Anyone else noticed such a big hike in rental prices? And what is this due to?

Yup! My husbands car got written off and still waiting on the replacement. Mine decided it was the perfect time to have a heart attack and die…. (Cam belt/interference engine) on week 3 of hire car as garage has no courtesy cars left….. husband cycling 80 miles a week to work.

car number 1 Ford fiesta - £42 a day only 40 miles then 10p a mile.,…

car number 2 Kia Rio £60 a day/ £175 a week no cap on mileage thankfully.

live in a rural village working in a school 30 minutes away……. Already on week 3 and will probably have to pay for week 4 🤬 possibly not worth going to work this month 😢

I refused to pay the silly price and luckily DH is with zip cars so we’ve hired for 4 hours .
Sorry about your predicament Didicat. That must be painful what with living in a village. Not trying to be annoying, but your DH is going to be fit when this is over!

I assuming it is the insurance that is the killer as to add my husband for the week was £50…. Nah I’ll just drive him and the kids everywhere…
