Half of DPs wages are taxed

summerfinn · 21/04/2023 09:32

My DS got paid his first month of his new salary yesterday. Which was eleven thousand euro he go taxed half of that which only left us with only 5500 as his monthly pay. The tax is system is disgusting in the country I live in. Even with that wage it's difficult to get by these days with the cost of everything.

It's not jealousy in any way shape or form.

I'm happy for people who are rich and who succeed.

But If you are rich, then to go on and complain to people about how hard you have it, having no money, is just ridiculous.

This.

OP originally posted on the cost of living forum. A forum where people struggle to pay their bills, yet she was there complaining about her €5k a month income.

The money struggles of someone who is upset at being unable to save for a deposit and who drives a two year old car is very different to someone who is struggling to pay their rent or feed their family. It’s crass and self centred. That’s what people are getting upset at.

I say that as someone from a household where both DH and I earn 6 figures each, so there is definitely no jealousy on my part.

Mycathatesmecuddling · 21/04/2023 11:24

She didn't, MN have moved it to this topic

if the OP wants help looking where to save money in her outgoings she would probably get help

I didn't see that it was moved, sorry. Thread is moving quite fast.

Titusgroan · 21/04/2023 11:26

OP hasn’t mentioned anything about pensions, just tax.
So neither did I.
I said I did the calc on Govn website.
They do a take home calc after tax and NI.

Mooshamoo · 21/04/2023 11:26

I always think that rich people completely lose sight of reality.

I only earn 130 k a year.

Next thing it will be I only earn 1 million a year.

Nothing is ever enough

Mooshamoo · 21/04/2023 11:27

I think this is a wind up post…

Childcare so you have time to exercise…😂Most people need childcare to go to work. Time to exercise has to be scheduled around the work day/cleaning/homework/laundry/cooking (shall I go on?)

Yes but OP also has to clean her house herself as she doesn't have a cleaner 😄

TooOldForThisNonsense · 21/04/2023 11:28

Boo hoo

its not that much better in Scotland , where paying over 40% in tax starts at a lot less than your husband earns. The SNP thinks someone on £43k is a high earner

Hellybelly84 · 21/04/2023 11:28

Scalottia · 21/04/2023 11:24

Thank you, I thought I was going crazy. As soon as a high salary is mentioned all bets are off.

"You do realise some families are working full time hours and still needing food banks at the moment?".

What has this^ got to do with the OP though? It's not her fault that families are struggling! Why even bring it up, it's irrelevant to the post. Are you trying to make her feel guilty?

If they are struggling, she can work. Thats pretty obvious to anyone.

But obviously time to exercise and clean is more important than needing that second salary.

No jealousy, just a case of reading the room and understanding most families have to earn two salaries and fit everything else around that. If they need extra income, work is the obvious answer for her.

Scalottia · 21/04/2023 11:20

Sigh. It's a money question in the money forum. It's not like she put it in AIBU. I don't think she posted in here to 'complain to people who have no money'. Was she wrong for making a post, as I asked before, should only people without much money be allowed to post in here?

Very good point.

Every board has been turned into a vitriolic gutter by an element on posters. It doesn’t matter where you post now, the miserable bitter ones will come and try to tear strips off you.

Trying to choose your new expensive handbag in Style and Beauty? The ‘don’t you know family’s are using foodbanks’ lot turn up and derail.

Trying to choose a house on Property and (gasp) your budget is over £700k, prepared to be mauled…

I think it happens when a thread trends, and jealous doors don’t look at where they are and come in all AIBU guns blazing.

There’s very little usefulness, or support, and fuck all kindness in this site anymore.

Wenfy · 21/04/2023 11:29

He needs to take some advice about how he can reduce this. He earns a bit less than me but in the UK I can off-set a good portion of my tax bill even when I’m an employee. Eg pensions, other benefits, trusts.

Peapodburgundybouquet · 21/04/2023 11:29

Nah forget kindness, replace with civility.

Titusgroan · 21/04/2023 11:29

wherethecityis · 21/04/2023 11:21

No it wouldn't. With pension contributions of 10%, which is fairly average, it would equate to a take home of £6160.
Even with no pension contributions it would be £6686

Forgot to tag you.

They do a take home calc after tax and NI.

Well there has to be something extra given a take home pay calculator works out that OPs partner should be taking home 6510 euros. There's got to be some other deductions or it doesn't add up.
Here it would be 6686 so not a massive difference at all.

Seriously, what la la land do you live in?

Your partner is funding your lifestyle significantly and you are still whingeing. Your entitlement is shocking.

Wishimaywishimight · 21/04/2023 11:27

Im feeling like super woman now managing to do that around work 😂😂😂

Snaaaaacks · 21/04/2023 11:30

Your husband is on the equivalent of £116,000 and you are moaning? So he takes home £58,000 a year and you can't manage? Well 2 of you need to go out to work, you know like the rest of us do. Didn't your husband look at what his take home pay would be prior to starting the job? Considering he's on so much he doesn't sound too smart having no idea how the tax system works.

Time to get job hunting...

Threads always go to shit when there’s a mention of a decent salary (before obscene taxation in this case) by some posters who are triggered, and despite vivid protestations, jealous of it.

Not really our household income is similar to the OPs, most of it is mine

I just dont come on a website where people are posting about how to access food banks to complain about my bills going up

Its like going on the miscarriage forum to complain about having to change your new babies nappies

summerfinn · 21/04/2023 11:31

MariaRemindsMeOfAWestSideStory · 21/04/2023 11:03

I can’t tell if you’re taking the piss OP.

You live with your dad so I assume your rent is minimal. You don’t work so don’t need to spend money on childcare costs.

What are you spending your money on?

I'm not taking the piss. We bought a lot of furniture ect to make the house comfortable and to our standards we have been paying this off.

OP posts:
Bentoforthehorde · 21/04/2023 11:31

You know, as a poor person, it's good to see conversations like this sometimes.
Juggling bills, literally having £0 bank balances, scraping by etc is stressful but we do have a happy family full of love etc.
Seeing people who have what we would consider a lot of money, indulging in pity parties and feeling like they have it hard is a good reminder that money doesn't make you appreciate what you have. Attitude and gratitude. There are people who are choosing between putting the heating on and doing a food shop, but still grateful for the roof over their heads etc, and then there are people crying in their Mercedes about how unfair their life is. I'd rather be poor and happy than well off and totally oblivious to how privileged I am.

Scalottia · 21/04/2023 11:31

I am not saying that OP is correct, to not be able to manage on that salary is ridiculous. Something is fundamentally wrong with their budgeting (or lack of).

What's bothering me here are all of the catty responses about violins and avocados. Typical responses as soon as someone on MN is a high earner. I see it on here quite often.

Exaspa · 21/04/2023 11:32

My half Irish (sensible, down to Earth, practical, hard working) niece, not paid anything near that stated amount by OP has an expression that I think would be very appropriate for the OP:

" Are yous for real?!"

My God, OP must have led a sheltered little life, is all I can think. (Along with a few other things about being utterly tone deaf and unaware of the average state of things in the rest of their own country, let alone the world.)

No it wasn't a good point. She initially posted somewhere else and Mumsnet MOVED it to money matters. So people who had already posted will just see it a a thread they are on, not where the post was.

Quite agree.

MN will stop asking for advice and support when all they get is quite the opposite.
We re on nothing like this but it doesn’t hurt to offer advice. If you have any.

Again I must say check your tax credits, he could easily be on emergency tax or not getting full credits.

Its a fine salary no matter what way you look at it, yes unfortunate if trying to buy and live in Dublin though.
