Half of DPs wages are taxed

summerfinn · 21/04/2023 09:32

My DS got paid his first month of his new salary yesterday. Which was eleven thousand euro he go taxed half of that which only left us with only 5500 as his monthly pay. The tax is system is disgusting in the country I live in. Even with that wage it's difficult to get by these days with the cost of everything.

So what? Half this forum is people moaning. But you are only allowed to moan about money if you're poor.

Which is what the ops done. She sees herself as poor

I sometimes wonder do rich people enjoy being cruel in front of poor people.

For example i go to a weekly art class. There is one very rich man in the room. He is always complaining. The last thing he complained about was this: his aunt owns a summer house in Greece. She gave it to him to use. And something went very slightly wrong with his trip. He complained for hours. In that art class I know that there are several women who are quite poor and who are struggling to get by in life. They don't complain. He complains.

It makes me think: do rich people actually just enjoy being cruel in front of people who have a lot less? Does it make them feel powerful?

For example If I am earning 130,000 a year and going to my family's summer house in Greece,

does it make me feel even more powerful and rich to complain about these things , in front of a woman who I know is struggling to feed her child..

I genuinely want to believe its out of touch rather than wanting to be cruel

Like the OP complaining about the cost of childcare so she can do her own cleaning, having a car thats two years old and having to pay off furniture that's 'to her standard' I think shes so far out of touch she doesnt think how that might come across to people doing their cleaning whilst their children are at home after working full time, having a 10 year old car and getting their furniture off facebook marketplace

My sister is a little like this, its amazing how quickly she has forgotten what its like to have a household income of 50k instead of 100k.

summerfinn · 21/04/2023 11:41

I already do that.

So how much money do you claim from the government a month?

HistoryFanatic · 21/04/2023 11:47

summerfinn · 21/04/2023 10:27

I wouldn't consider us rich. Yes we drive a Mercedes but it's not brand new. It's a couple of years old. Maybe I am being stupid . But we don't drink or smoke or go out anywhere fancy. Our focus is on doing things with the children, buying them what they need and having our rented home comfortable with nice things we have purchased. We eat organic food but cook ourselves 99percent of the time. We haven't gone abroad since 2019 . I'm not here to rub it in . I merely think it's unfair that my DP who works in the tech industry all his life and has worked his way up is taxed that much . That's all. Money is relative

The Mercedes comment. 😂
If you are really struggling go out and work. Did you really post this on the cost of living board?!?

StNinian · 21/04/2023 11:47

It is true that in the UK we have some of the highest taxes in the world.

mincedtart · 21/04/2023 11:47

None of this adds up:

You live with your dad but have apparently spent a great deal of your money on furniture.

You don’t work because you’re disabled, but put your kids in childcare…so you can exercise.

You think the national health system is bad because of a lack of resources, but think your tax shouldn’t be spent on public healthcare.

Your partner has worked in tech all his life to get to this salary level, but his tax rate has come as a shock to you both.

Very interesting.

sigh - she didnt post it in Money Matters, MNHQ moved it from... cost of living I think

Jesus Christ, read the post where I acknowledged my error! It was in money matters when I first read it. I made a mistake. Move on.

Why would you moan about it if you are wealthy?

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 21/04/2023 11:48

To me, op or seems you want the nice life but are struggling to afford it all and to keep up.

So pick the thing that matters to you and your family most right now and direct the mo ey towards that. It seems like you want to buy a house so stop wasting money on furniture that likely won't suit the house you buy! Your husband is working all hours and then the money gets squandered on stuff that is meaningless. You need to think of the end game not just the in-the-moment "I want that" type stuff.
Remember the saying "watch the pennies and the pounds look after themselves" it's so true!

The OP is moaning shes middle income whilst being very very higher than middle income

Of course she is getting her arse handed to her, she is completely out of touch

Would it actually be helpful to tell her that shes right and its impossible to live on that income?

Its far better for her long term for people to tell her shes out of touch because if she is buying furniture on credit because they don't have savings on that salary shes doing something wrong and pretending the salary is impossible to live on isn't about to help her

CinnamonCoffee · 21/04/2023 11:48

I earn 14000 a year! Professional job but lone parent to young twins so limited working hours.
Maybe I needs to get me a rich fella then moan about how unfair life is!!
And the people defending the OP wtf?

mincedtart · 21/04/2023 11:49

Oh and I missed a doozy: you claim government money yourself. But don’t want to pay tax.

Lol.

HistoryFanatic · 21/04/2023 11:48

Well....it seems that the OP is.

Mooshamoo · 21/04/2023 11:50

Has OP admitted that her DP earns a very high wage yet. I'd like her to just admit that they are not middle income earners, they are high earners.

And you don't have a cleaner either!

How do you cope??

Gondala · 21/04/2023 11:50

I think the only real advice you need is that even the rich buy furniture from Ikea!

Scalottia · 21/04/2023 11:51

I don't think the OP is right. I think the OP and her partner are shit with money. The furniture comment is ridiculous.

But so are the catty comments.

mincedtart · 21/04/2023 11:49

Lol.

It's remarkable.

DanceMonster · 21/04/2023 11:52

If you’re buying furniture on credit because the existing furniture wasn’t to ‘your standard’, and are therefore having to pay it off monthly, of course that’s going to impact your ability to save.

Mooshamoo · 21/04/2023 11:52

I'll just get back into my two year old mercedes, and cry while eating my organic food.

I'm sorry but it is funny. If you are going to say ridiculous things like "I have it so difficult, my mercedes isn't brand new, it's two years old".

Be prepared to be made fun of.

summerfinn · 21/04/2023 11:53

Perhaps I should just take the post down. I'm sorry for offending anyone. But the mean comments aren't helping my depression. I put it in the wrong thread title I'm sorry. Also sorry that my DP earns that amount. It's not my fault. I don't have many friends so maybe this thread has put it all into perspective. I'm lucky and should just stop complaining. 🙈

@Mooshamoo

I think they're mostly oblivious. I was talking to someone recently who bemoaned the cost of living and said she had to choose between a month in Tuscany this summer or getting her ha-ha repaired this year.

She wasn't joking.

Yep. Lasts a long time.

Littleheart5 · 21/04/2023 11:57

So you’re on a disability payment (funded by the taxpayer), had two children in hospitals (funded by the taxpayer), will no doubt send your kids to school (funded by the taxpayer), get free GP care for your kids (funded by the taxpayer), children’s allowance of €140 per month per child (funded by the taxpayer). I think you’ll doing alright for the taxes your DP pays there OP, might be time to cop yourself on and count your blessings.

Saving that move to another country with lower taxes, plenty of tech jobs out there
