Name changed for this.

DP and I gave got some debt in the UK. 2 years ago we went to a firm to help us with our debt. They manage our debt for us, they are the link between us and our creditors. In the 2 years we have some more debt than they know. Due to me not finding a job and all has to come from DP. We can't get any benefits or nothing. so everything DP earns has to go on rent, council tax, gas and water, food, car, insurance.
DP phoned a company (don't know who) but they gave him advice to not pay anything anymore, open another bank account at another bank, and not pay anyone anymore. they gave us a plan of our expenses to show to our creditors and to pay them only what we can till we go back to SA. They said we than cannot be held responsible for the debt when we are back in SA.

Now, I wasn't raised in this way, I want to pay everything back, I cannot just leave the country and leave my debt here. We have a plan - DH is maybe going to stay and pay off most of the debt.

my questions are:

  1. If we leave UK, can we be held responsible for debt here?
  2. If we build ourselves up in SA, and one day they come knocking for their money, can they take our house/car that we have then in SA?

Have you tried contacting your local Citizens Advice Bureau? They give free advice and maybe able to point you in the right direction!
