How much do you spend a week on food, and for how many people?

OP posts:
Fiona7656 · 13/03/2023 18:47

Can’t afford to shop there

pawz · 13/03/2023 18:48

Two people, two cats. Cat food mainly bought from pet stores, but random bits added in from Ocado. No alcohol / cleaning products in the shops.

About £150-200 a week, if we're in summer (or around occasions we want to do a fancy meal) we generally shop at the butchers for meat so that knocks down the amount spent on Ocado.

icelollycraving · 13/03/2023 18:50

£200 - £250 2 adults and a pre teen who is a snack monster.

Lastnamedidntstick · 13/03/2023 18:50

3 adults, one older teenager.

150-200 every 10 days. Including toiletries, household stuff etc.

I find it cheaper as I can find deals easier, don’t impulse buy, and save money on petrol/parking.

BatFaceOwl · 13/03/2023 18:57

I shop at m and s. 2 adults and one 16 year old at home. I spend £200+ a week

BatFaceOwl · 13/03/2023 18:58

@Fiona7656 why contribute to the thread then? It clearly asked IF ..

Youreeavinalaff · 13/03/2023 18:58

£150 to £200 per week, family of 4, includes cleaning, laundry, toiletries and household items. It used to be around £100-125 only a few years ago. We don't buy lots of luxuries, meat or processed food and cook from scratch mostly.

ClassicLib · 13/03/2023 19:07

I buy basics & cleaning products from Lidl and top up with nice things from M&S or Waitrose. I spent £37 at M&S on Saturday, including 3 meal deals (Gastropub Dine in, steak & sides, and stir fry).
M&S are making a big push to be more competitive on basic groceries with their current ‘remarksable value’ offers, so I will probably buy more stuff from them in future. Overall, we probably spend about £60-70 per week for the two of us, excluding alcohol.

NoMoneyForEducation · 13/03/2023 19:36

£110-130 a week - 2 adults, 2 teens.

I find getting 2 shops a week is cheaper as it stops me popping to a local supermarket for top ups and doing more impulse buying. So I have one on a Tuesday normally c£45 (top up milk/packed lunch stuff/bread/apples etc) Then one on a Friday for weekend stuff. £60-£70 ish.

Very little meat.
Very little/no alcohol
Very little cleaning products (cleaner brings her own)
Does include toiletries/loo roll/washing powder/dishwasher stuff.

NoMoneyForEducation · 13/03/2023 19:37

Should have said...mine if from Ocado. Much more restrained buying on line than wandering round the store.

Forever42 · 13/03/2023 19:39

4 people, 1 cat. £130-160 a week. Usually a £20-£25 top-up shop too.

FireBowl · 13/03/2023 19:39

2 adults, a dog, and a cat - £200 per week.

suzyscat · 13/03/2023 19:40

I have to say since the switched over to M&S I noticed my spending went up instantly but also seemed to have less food/ actual meals.

Forever42 · 13/03/2023 19:40

Should have said, I use Ocado.

"Tone deaf" post, "cost of living crisis", "not everybody has the privilege of shopping at Marks and Spencer!"

Oddbobbyboo · 13/03/2023 19:40

Off topic..... I only ever pick up bread and milk and anything we fancy with a yellow sticker.... but for any M&S regular food shoppers.... you can actually have a shop on them xx

Shocked at these replies I always use Ocado for 2 adults 1 dc but £75 a week is average for us

Sneakyblinders · 13/03/2023 19:41

£100 a week, 2 adults and 2 toddlers.

But doesn't really include lunches as we buy these out (not wfh that much) and will probably eat out at least once during the week for dinner and weekend.

BatFaceOwl · 13/03/2023 19:42

@uhOhOP so why bother commenting then? Absolutely pointless. Unless you're saying only those with lower budgets are allowed to post

highstep · 13/03/2023 19:44

Thanks all, I'm currently spending about £100 a week in Tesco for 4 is (lots of meat, but of alcohol, but not cleaning stuff as I do that on Amazon) and doesn't include kids' lunches. I love M&S food and getting frustrated at how much is out of stock in Tesco atm (not just salad stuff!) and was curious how much more it would be to try Ocado, I like to do one online shop a week and try to avoid "nipping in" or I spend unnecessarily!

About £150 per week for 2 adults and 2 kids. I find if you buy the deals to make up most meals it doesn’t cost much more than elsewhere and the fruit & veg seems to last much better than any other supermarket so we don’t waste so much.

I have been buying from waitrose the last couple of weeks though as their latest offers on own brand stuff are great.

"Tone deaf" post, "cost of living crisis", "not everybody has the privilege of shopping at Marks and Spencer!"

No but thousands of people do, otherwise they would go bust. Are those people not allowed a voice, or to see if their spending is rational/reasonable? Its not tone deaf to ask how much people spend in a specific Supermarket just because some people can't shop there. This is the money matters board, people post about huge inheritances etc. Can they not post either?

RecklessBlackberries · 13/03/2023 19:45

We shop on Ocado and buy a mix of Ocado and M&S things. We're two adults, a cat and a toddler and we spend around £80-100 a week. It's about the same as we were spending at Sainsburys. I'm surprised how high other people's bills are.

You can shop at ocado without having to purchase any M&S products. Own brand stuff is very competitive.

there’s been quite a bit in the media recently where comparisons have been done between ocado and tesco etc and ocado comes out cheaper. Even with M&S if you’re savvy and get the deals it’s not expensive.

my “big shop” is cheaper with ocado than elsewhere. It’s not “tone deaf”, it’s posters helping o/p compare an average shop and decide whether she’d be better off moving 🤷‍♀️
