How much do you spend a week on food, and for how many people?

OP posts:
Duhduhdub · 13/03/2023 20:45

Between £150-£200 a week. 2 adults and 2 kids who take packed lunches to school every day. That includes all food, cleaning/laundry products, alcohol and toiletries for everyone. DH is gluten free and his bread, pasta etc is expensive.

RichTeaCheddars · 13/03/2023 20:45

With ocado I spend £85 roughly for 2 adults and a nearly 3 year old. If I buy extras such as treats/bulk buy toilet roll, larger laundry stuff as on offer then can be closer to £130.

Interestingly if I go to Sainsbury's in person so not online I spend about the same amount but don't enjoy the food as much. Not too sure why it's not cheaper but it doesn't seem to be for me. I probably get a little more food at Sainsbury's than via ocado but still lasts the same amount of time.

Hoppinggreen · 13/03/2023 20:48

Around £200 for 3 adults ( one is a tiny vegetarian) and 1 teen boy who eats loads
Doesnt include dog food and we don’t drink much but buy about 1 bottle of decent wine a week.

Titsywoo · 13/03/2023 20:49

£100 a week for 3 of us (all adults) which I don't think is too bad. I cook mostly from scratch and we don't drink alcohol. This also doesn't include loo roll/kitchen roll/washing powder/dish washer tablets/foil and cling film as we get those in bulk from Costco. It does include toiletries and cleaning products though.

Petesbowtie9 · 13/03/2023 20:50

I wait until I get the 25% off vouchers from
Ocado ( pretty regularly )

LivingTheDreamNow · 13/03/2023 20:57

I do a weekly online shop with Waitrose, 2 adults and a dog.
Spend between £100-£130 a week but that covers everything, food, wine, cleaning products, dog food and toiletries & free Sunday newspaper, fruit & Veg is always fresh & if anything is short dated I complain & get a refund.
I wouldn’t buy food in shop with a 1-2 day best by date so won’t accept it for a home delivery. We rarely eat out & both eat lunch at home.

sheusesmagazines · 13/03/2023 20:57

2 adults, 2 children in full time nursery (so no childrens lunches), includes nappies and toiletries. £125-225 a week

loudbatperson · 13/03/2023 20:59

Family of 5 here. The main weekly shop generally comes in between £140-£160 and probably spend £30-£40 on top up shops for fresh bits during the week. We get a butchers box once a month too for our roast joints. We will normally eat out or order in once a week, but that spending covers all other meals. That doesn't include toiletries though, as we all have put favourites we get from other places.

We could cut that back if we needed to, but we are fortunate enough not to need to at the moment.

BigMacExtraPickles · 13/03/2023 21:01

£600 a month budget always stick within it.

2 adults and 2 DS (9&6)

It's really not as expensive as people think and the quality is worth any additional imo.

spanglepants · 13/03/2023 21:02

£130 every fortnight for 2 adults. Includes wine, household stuff, toiletries. I find it cheaper and better quality than other supermarkets. Cook from scratch every night which is definitely cheaper and we work from home so includes lunch stuff. Occasionally we do a top up shop but not often. Ocado own brand range is really good and always expanding. Love that it comes bagged unlike other supermarkets.

FixTheBone · 13/03/2023 21:03

2 adults, 6 children
300-350/week

Correlation · 13/03/2023 21:03

£150 a week on Ocado. 2 adults, 2 kids under 2 so nappies, formula milk, wipes etc included.

WishIdDoneItYearsAgo · 13/03/2023 21:03

5 of us plus a huge dog. Weekly Ocado shop varies between £150-£180 a week. That doesn’t include wine or beer.

Whitewolf2 · 13/03/2023 21:04

Ocado have started doing a price match with Tesco, so you get money back if you spend more than you would have done at Tesco on equivalents.
So far I haven’t had any money back as I generally try to buy things that are already discounted, but I appreciate the gesture!
We spend approx £130-£150 per week for 2 adults, 2 kids for a full weekly shop including toiletries and sometimes alcohol.

ginislife · 13/03/2023 21:07

I did an Ocado order at the weekend that was £150 (3 adults) but didn't check out. Teen adult is learning to drive so wanted to take me shopping instead.......£88 in Lidl, £68 in Iceland and £95 in Tesco later.........I've refused to go shopping again for 3 weeks !!

TheMatriarchy · 13/03/2023 21:18

I find Ocado expensive, at least 10-50p extra per item, but I do still use it because its handy, reliable, sales items are good, and I still have a smart pass to finish up. But I wont be renewing the smart pass, as I have to go to other supermarkets anyway as their fruit and veg is terrible. I will just use it in future for occasional shops for things I cant get elsewhere (their range is brilliant). If you have a smart pass and you place your Christmas order as soon as they are released (you can change it up until 24hrs before delivery) you will get a good slot.

We have a saying in our house, prompted by pretty much the same: "Never go shopping with a child!" It always adds up.

MoomiMama · 13/03/2023 21:22

Agree the website / app and the service is generally really good.
Price wise, I’d say they are reasonably competitive on branded stuff and on the fancier own brand stuff. Some staples - eg fresh milk, cucumbers - are price matched by everyone and cost the same everywhere. However they are much more expensive than supermarket budget ranges. So depends what you buy as to how you will find they compare.
One bonus is they do “flash sales” as you check out your order - effectively yellow sticker stuff. This can (though not always) be great value. On the other hand they are also very clever at asking if you “forgot” to order that luxury treat food you bought for a special occasion and tempting you to spend more!
There are no points to collect and no loyalty scheme but they send you money off vouchers (including free wine for your annual shopping anniversary!).

InSpainTheRain · 13/03/2023 21:23

About 120 a week if it's the two of us. If adults DCs are home it can go up to 200 for 4 for a week.

thelionthewitchtheaudacityofTHISbitch · 13/03/2023 21:24

The Ocado Xmas orders now have to be cancelled more than 14 days before the Xmas delivery date, otherwise you are still charged the £9-99 delivery charge. They introduced that 2 years ago. Everyone pays the same delivery charge at Xmas, even if you have a delivery pass.

SapatSea · 13/03/2023 21:36

Ocado have recently (re) introduced their Tesco price match offer/voucher scheme

Infinitebows · 13/03/2023 21:40

£120 ish per week. 2 adults. Amongst other bits this includes dog food, a crate of beer, few ciders, generally 5 evening meals, lunch and breakfast stuff.

Growlybear83 · 13/03/2023 21:42

I spend between £130-150 per week for two of us and one cat, plus around £100 per month for meat from Eversfield and an occasional trip to waitrose to stock up on some of the nice things I can't get from Ocado any more now that they've changed their partnership to M&S. I've always thought Ocado are brilliant in terms of reliability and stock availability but I do wish they hadn't changed.

ReallyShouldBeDoingSomethingElse · 13/03/2023 21:44

I spend £70 a week for me and DD on Ocado. Every few months I put my shopping list into Tesco and Ocado on the same day to check that it's not a big difference. At most I'd save £3 doing my shop at Tesco but it's false economy because I find Tesco fruit/veg more likely to have bits in it that need chucking.

I enjoy shopping with Ocado and very rarely have any issues with our shop.

Youreeavinalaff · 13/03/2023 18:58

£150 to £200 per week, family of 4, includes cleaning, laundry, toiletries and household items. It used to be around £100-125 only a few years ago. We don't buy lots of luxuries, meat or processed food and cook from scratch mostly.

Same

I also spend about £20-30 pw on top up shops elsewhere for things Ocado doesn’t do as well. (eg some meat, cheese, fruit).
