Gas and electric- I don’t have currently and moving out

I currently live at home so I don’t have own supplier for gas and electricity. I’m moving to a property that has just been built. I just wondered who would be best for gas and electric to sign up with? And how to go about? Also on low income :(

I would imagine they are all pretty much the same in terms of prices at the moment for new customers.

Money Saving Expert website is a great resource for anything money related.

Im currently with Octopus. Good customer service and easy to use app.

They are currently doing an offer where if you sign up using a current customer’s referral code, both you and the customer get £50 credit on your energy account.

If you would like to use mine the link is below-

When you move in there will be existing suppliers, you will need to transfer the bills to your name.

Once you have the bills in your name you can check which supplier is cheapest for you on price comparison site.

What happens when there is no previous as we will be first people in the house?

The builder will have signed up with a supplier, so ask which one. If you want to move to a new one you only need to speak to the new supplier and they do everything.

As all prices are high anyway I recently chose to go with Octopus as they get the best reviews for customer service and my contact with them so far has been really efficient and helpful.

Another vote for Octopus

JesPrinee · 22/02/2023 06:58

I'm with Shell theyre ok

The builder will have a supplier - they will have been using Electricity in the house for sure, and possibly gas too.
Initially, I'd stick with whoever is currently supplying the property. It's just one less thing to sort when you move in. Remember to take meter readings (and ideally photos) for gas, electricity and water that first day .
When things calm down a bit, look at moving supplier if you want.
Personally, we've found Shell awful. Octopus are doing much better. Noone is going to be different on price right now.

Go with octopus

Cyclistmumgrandma · 22/02/2023 08:10

Octopus all the way.

Once you’ve chosen your energy company, you can ask them about support for people on a low income. Lots of schemes being run at the moment.

If this is all new to you I would also advise booking an appointment with Citizen’s Advice- it’s free and they can advise you on pretty much anything! They will have good benefit knowledge and can help you budget and make sure you’re getting everything you’re entitled to.
