I find it ridiculous for their level of skills. No wonder they’re leaving for Australia / New Zealand

Yes its shocking, all NHS staff are paid poorly, the government rely on their goodwill

CPParenttoDD1234 · 20/02/2023 08:15

Round here cleaners charge £20/hour. I know what I would rather do! It’s insane how badly the NHS staff are treated and paid. They are literally the people who keep the country alive!

OttilieKnackered · 20/02/2023 08:16

Is that take home or gross pay? How have they calculated it?

DuckDuckDiva · 20/02/2023 08:22

I sat down with my friend who is a GP and at breaking point recently and worked out how much he was actually being paid considering he is at work pretty much 12 hours a day as loads of doctors have left. He's pretty much holding down the fort and doesn't get overtime for the hours worked. I was shocked at how little it was.

Hollyhead · 20/02/2023 08:23

I will start this with no I don’t think they’re paid enough. However comparing their hourly rate with what a cleaner charges is completely disingenuous. The cleaner has to pay - pension, travel, cover sickness/holiday, insurance, tax out of that £20 per hour. The NHS pension is good for a start - 23% employer contribution, paid sick leave, enhanced maternity leave.

It’s also the working conditions that need looking at - you can’t really assess what is a fair rate of pay until you have a reasonable working set up.

IloveRickyGervaisAndHisTeeth · 20/02/2023 08:24

My neighbour is a GP, tells me he works 4 days a week, 8.30 - 4.30, gets £80k

Cleaner also doesn’t have guaranteed hours and doesn’t get paid between jobs.

Oceans of cash has been pumped into the NHS and it’s never enough.

Hollyhead · 20/02/2023 08:27

Also, that’s the basic pay, nights are paid at a 37% increase, there are also uplifts for weekends. The whole thing is very complicated. I personally think medics should just join the AFC pay scale and simplify the whole lot to a standard hourly rate.

MarshaBradyo · 20/02/2023 08:29

There’s NHS but the senior consultants I know set up private as well and earn well. Which is good imo

He must be very fortunate then, since I don't know a single GP who clears that much for short hours. Be that as it may, GP practices are generally not NHS - they are private businesses contracted to the NHS.

MajorCarolDanvers · 20/02/2023 08:38

Hospital £29K up to £119K average £78K

GPs £65K to £98K

From NHS website for 2022

Many top this up with private earnings.

Hayley37888 · 20/02/2023 08:39

their pay has dropped by 30% in real terms. Forget the AFC scale. They’re aren’t going to be any doctors left in this country if we don’t pay them what they’re worth

No weekends. No late evenings. Lots part time. More than other jobs that have similar levels of stress points but far far less autonomy and unionised members.

Also junior doctors don’t have a private income… that’s a consultant only thing.

also why do we want this Tory privatisation? Are you anti doctors working for the nhs?

Our local doctors survey have the salaries of the gos on their website. Before I left on maternity, I was making more than them working g in my care work... I was working 70 hours a week mins but I was shocked at how little they're paid!!

HelpMeGetThrough · 20/02/2023 08:48

My GPs website is saying the average GP salary in the practice is a shade over £56k.

A hospital doctor doesn't do evenings and weekends?

He is very lucky. The GP I know is working in an extremely short staffed practice. 5 GPs have left in 10 months as they can't handle it anymore. 3 of them are moving into completely different jobs. He gets to work at 7:30 and often isn't home until 10. He's called me up in tears on multiple occasions. He worked 81 hours last week because he didn't have time for all the paperwork, and ended up working Saturday and Sunday morning. His colleagues are doing the same. His wife has had enough as he hardly sees her and his daughter. He's looking for a way out. It's awful. He doesn't clear 80k a year but possibly because he's not that senior.

Our local gp average was £80k (spread over pt and ft salaries)

Show me evidence that experienced, non trainee/ junior hospital dr levels of staffing are the same as midweek and I’ll believe you. An average is just that. Consultants earn a lot more. GPs know the t and cs when they go down that route. So I don’t feel too sorry for them no.

Doesnthaveaphd · 20/02/2023 09:23

Junior Doctors pay and hours are atrocious. That will be bringing the salary average down. You’re only a junior doctor for a relatively short time though. Once you’re out the other side then it is a well paid career. Yes it’s hard work but most jobs are.

Not going to argue with you. Just state that my friend didn't have a clue he would be working 80 hour weeks when he started medical school and chose General Practice. I feel very sorry for him as it has broken him and he is looking for a way out. I do also understand that there is a lot of anger towards GPs at the moment.

Aphrathestorm · 20/02/2023 09:28

I think the juniors are paid too little bit older ones paid too much.

Starting salaries shouldn't be under £30k, more like £40k where hours are over 37.

But do all consultants really need six figure salaries?

Usernameusavailable · 20/02/2023 09:30

I fear your friend is not cut out for that job then - the world and it’s mother knows that ridiculously long hours have been banged on about since the 70s.
part of the problem is the systemic underfunding but to not know that long hours are commensurate with being a Dr is well, evidence of a blithe mess that is shocking or a lack of critical thinking - unless they were just hoping for a wage in the top % of average for 9-5 hours
