Moving from Octopus to OVO/EDF

Advice please. Same as most horrified at bills. We were moved to Octopus when AVRO went bust. Just looking at out Unit prices and it says our electric is 65p while Ovo is 35p. Is our really this bad or are they quoting me with the price cap?

That’s very weird as I think Octopus are pretty much the best supplier around (we were also moved when our supplier failed but I wouldn’t move now). They can’t do much about prices but I’ve found their comms great and I thought they were very slightly less than most others - on the standing charge maybe, I don’t recall.

Octopus unit rates are 31-36p ish on standard tariff (based on region) so I don’t know why you’d be paying 65p. Does it include the standing charge in the first unit?

Standing charge is 35p on top of that. Think I'll message them and question it.

If you are looking on the app they do say those prices need updating to reflect the price cap. They aren’t current. You can find the actual prices here: octopus.energy/blog/energy-price-cap-oct-2022/

Octopus quote the 'underlying' rate and then take off a rate per unit further down the bill to make the unit rate the capped unit rate. Unless you are on an odd economy 7 type tariff you won't be paying Octopus 65p per unit.

Do not move to OVO! Their customer service is AWFUL. Take a look at the complaints page on Facebook - SSE/OVO Complaints.

I realise there's problems with every provider but can only speak from experience.
I've been with them years as they've always been the cheapest but12months ago my meter broke and I'm still waiting for a replacement. They finally gave me an appointment yesterday and never showed up. They're now refusing to rebook the appointment.
I'm now looking to move elsewhere and pay more to relieve the stress!

Octopus aren't charging you 65 p a unit, it will be 35p, and their customer service is great.

I think they're the only supplier that I don't see multiple complaints about on MN/other forums.

Scienceadvisory · 11/02/2023 01:30

I'm with octupus and paying 32p per kwh. How they do it is they state the rate as 64.44p p/kwh and then discount the bill to reflect the price cap. I've always found them a great company, only one to actually suggest I've paid too much and encouraged me to withdraw cash.

well surely all you would expect to see on the SSE/OVO complaints page is complaints?

Ovo are rubbish at customer service! My MIL is having a dreadful time with them as well as our next door neighbour. If you can use the net to pay your Bill's then they seem okish but anything out of the norm then ovo causes a massive headache.

Scouser1973 · 22/10/2023 18:07

I would really like to tell the people of great Britain to seriously think about joining ovo which is owned buy a billionaire Stephen fit patrick who said on live television to do star jumps and cuddle a dog in a cost of living crisis what does he know about the cost of living he hasn't got a clue and he's offsetting your money to his other company imagination industries to set up his failing business I hope to be leaving ovo after my 12 month contract as I did not choose to go to ovo because the people who work for him have no empathy at all when they talk to customers they should be de regulated and leave the industry because of there incompetence

Ovo nightmare company Keep away

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 23/10/2023 10:29

Purely on experience of their customer service I'd say don't touch EDF.
