E.on Next - gone from £250 in credit to £2300 in debit?!

This surely can not be possible?

We have gas and electric with E.on Next. It’s always in credit, it was over £200 in credit the last time I had checked.

We got asked for meter readings which we gave - it said they were high for what was expected but they were correct so we submitted them.

I have just checked my account and it’s now £2,300 in debit!!!

We have lived here for 2 years and obviously this was nowhere near what we paid last year - it’s just the 2 of us living here and I didn’t put the heating on until late November / early December!

I do work from home most days but even so - surely it cannot be this high?

I’m going to call them first thing in the morning, but has anyone else had a similar situation?

How frequently are you giving actual meter readings?

DemonHost · 07/02/2023 20:07

Surely you give meter readings every month and can see the difference?

There will be a record on their website of all your readings.

dementedpixie · 07/02/2023 20:09

How often do you submit readings?
Is it both readings they said was high or just one of them?

dementedpixie · 07/02/2023 20:10

And how much do you pay each month?
When was the last time you had an actual bill with proper readings rather than estimates?

WaddleAway · 07/02/2023 20:10

We’re with eon and I give weekly meter readings to make sure I always know how much we’re using and how much credit we have. How often do you submit readings? What was your actual usage for the period they’ve billed?

MargaritMargo · 07/02/2023 20:13

If you’ve not submitted readings regularly then yes it could be I guess?

However if you’re submitting the readings regularly, even every few months, then it’s unlikely to be that much. That’s a years usage isn’t it, and you’ve been paying surely more than 100£ a month combined already?

FLA92 · 07/02/2023 20:14

I can’t remember when we sent our last sent a meter reading but it would’ve been months ago. We have a flex tariff of £62 per month.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 07/02/2023 20:14

My bill is about 350.00 a month at the minute so depending how many months since you sent a reading it could be.

WaddleAway · 07/02/2023 20:15

It sounds like it could be right then. You’re obviously aware gas and electricity prices have gone through the roof recently? £62 a month is extremely low.

WaddleAway · 07/02/2023 20:15

We pay £330 a month.

FLA92 · 07/02/2023 20:17

It says total used £326.29 from September to December.

judesxmumx · 07/02/2023 20:17

If you are paying £62 a month and were £200 in credit, then I'm going to say yes that unfortunately it is more than likely correct Shock

FLA92 · 07/02/2023 20:18

I totally appreciate it should be higher than last year, but surely not this much higher? We were in credit all of last year!

OP posts:
QforCucumber · 07/02/2023 20:18

Yeah we are still on a fixed rate and even still are paying £120 a month for ours based on monthly reads and October 2021 rates, if you’re on a variable tariff and only paying £60 a month it’s likely you’re using way more than you’re paying for

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 07/02/2023 20:18

£62 a month is really low. We are a below average use household and even we’re spending £200 a month at the minute.

If you haven’t submitted a bill for 10 months or so and you have the heating on every day it could quite possibly be correct.

dementedpixie · 07/02/2023 20:18

£62 is nothing. Is that a standard variable or a fixed tariff you have?

My last months usage was £360 combined on the standard variable rate and month before was £380.

WaddleAway · 07/02/2023 20:19

You should be able to see online when you last submitted a meter reading and what it was.

QforCucumber · 07/02/2023 20:19

Look at your bills - what were your rates last year, what are they now. They have at least doubled, almost Trebled for many

FLA92 · 07/02/2023 20:19

Variable tariff and we haven’t had the heating on every day - only started using it in December and only for a few hours a day.

Massively panicking now.

£62 a month is very low for how high prices are now. You have been seriously underpaying and the meter reading has caught that up.

Our fix has just finished and we were paying on average £5-6 a day. Since the fix ended we have gone up to £13-14 a day.

Speak to them but you will have to up your monthly payment by a considerable amount and also give much more frequent meter readings.

OntarioBagnet · 07/02/2023 20:21

If you’re paying the same as last year, haven’t prices gone up by 4x? So you should be paying like £250 a month. Which is £2500 a year. So yeah I could easily see you could be 2k in debt at this time of year.

FLA92 · 07/02/2023 20:22

I think I’ll be getting a smart meter… our meter is in a really awkward place, outside and have to crawl behind some bins (hence not doing it often enough!).

OP posts:
WaddleAway · 07/02/2023 20:22

Knowing prices have risen so high im surprised you haven’t submitted more regular readings.

GideonSmideon · 07/02/2023 20:22

What temp did you have your heating on? Do you have an immersion heater? Radiators or storage heaters?

FLA92 · 07/02/2023 20:23

I feel incredibly stupid and incredibly worried but I’ll have to speak with them tomorrow. Thank you everyone.
