Paying off debt on someone else name

Hi

This may seem like a silly question but if I were to pay off someone’s debt using my bank card (debit). Does that then mean I am financially linked to the debt and they can come after me for the whole amount?

I am currently not financially linked to the person in debt.

does it make a difference if I sent a cheque or pay with a card?

sorry if this seems daft… I’ve never been in this situation before.

thanks.

No you wouldn’t be linked. If for example you were making a lump sum on their behalf it would be noted that someone else had paid.

Why are you paying off someone else's debt?
