I don’t think I’d tell anyone the full amount; just keep it to “we had a little win” to justify treating people.

I don’t think £1M is enough to completely change lifestyle - yes, it’s life changing; but you’re not going to suddenly be living in a mansion and taking helicopters everywhere. It’d make life bloody comfortable though!

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/01/2023 22:11

I plan to stay up to midnight ……

Talking about £1M not being a life changing amount, I suppose its not enough to give up work etc, especially for somebody younger. But 30, 40 years ago it probably would have been. Has the top prize always been a million, because that would have had a very different effect decades ago? I wonder.

You see the top national lottery prizes listed as millions and millions and I always think maybe that's too much, it's the equivalent of the GDP of a small country maybe? You wouldn't know what to do with it all,its a bit scary. You could share with friends and family and make a lot of generous donations I suppose.

But one million no longer seems special as there are many quite ordinary people nowadays with a million or more in assets, probably due to property price inflation over the last few decades. Not me though!

Is it time to update the value of the top prize? To get people more excited, like in the past? Obviously I wouldn't say no to the million though...

I wouldn’t turn down a million but it’s not the complete life changer it would have been 40 odd years ago.
I’m old enough that I could limp through to retirement on it. I’ve only got £70k left on my mortgage, so I’d clear that. Then perhaps buy a couple of flats or houses and let them out. Something to create an income but not have to actually get up and go to work for it.

I found this on the NS&I website:

The maximum investment at that time [1956] was just £500 and the maximum prize available was £1,000, which was a lot considering the average weekly pay was £10 a week but with average house prices at just under £2,000, it wouldn’t have been enough to buy your dream home.

CointreauVersial · 02/01/2023 23:22

Ooh, joining in, and hoping for a fruitful 2023!

Had an OK 2022, winning £250 on £14,026 PBs. The random £26 are "paper" bonds, some dated 1957, from when they first launched, and until about 20 years ago these were the only PBs I held. One has my grandmother's handwriting on it. I'm far too sentimental to get rid of them, even though not one of them has ever given me a win - this means it's a total chore whenever I sell any, because I have to apply by filling in a form to avoid the "oldest first" rule.

Would be wonderful to answer the door to Agent Million, but realistically a nice sum each month will do.

Pemba · 02/01/2023 23:26

@PriamFarrl thanks for finding that out, interesting, so in the fifties you couldn't even buy an average house with the top prize! The top prize is a lot more valuable nowadays then, contrary to what I thought.

I wonder when it went to a million? I do know that until fairly recently there was only one prize of a million each month, now I think there's two.

Poodleporn · 03/01/2023 00:24

Can someone post the list please?

Nope! My husband and I would bask in the glory!!! The only person I'd tell is my boss...when I tell him to stick his job up his arse 😂

Ditto

OneFrenchEgg · 03/01/2023 00:43

Nope but I saw someone with £2 invested in the 70s won £10k!

FiveShelties · 03/01/2023 00:57

Not on the list - which is a little sad as I was just working out what to spend it on.

Adviceneeded200 · 03/01/2023 02:35

Reckon the £2 in 70s was a christening gift! Most of us kids got them. I had £13 from back then.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/01/2023 03:22

Wasn’t working for me at midnight

knew I wasn’t a millionaire lol

jan winners here

eyes are blurry as it’s 3am so going back ro

OP posts:
FunctionalSkills · 03/01/2023 06:37

So that person with £2 is probably unaware they still have it - do they hunt wimners down? What if they've moved house?!
