Caters Allowance

Can anyone please help ?

I am in receipt of carers allowance and I don't work.

however I was walked to sit on a panel for university to offer advice on a project, i didn't realise this was a paid project. I have sat on it for the past months for 2 hours a month. This has now concluded, I have been sent an email to say they want details to make payment of £900.

what do I need to do ? Notify carers allowance or not as it is not a job or anything else that I will be getting again.

do I just need to notify child tax at the end of the year ?

any advice is greatly appreciated.

You should notify them but if you don't earn more than £132 a week your carers allowance won't be affected.

Coxspurplepippin · 23/12/2022 11:42

You can earn about £130 per week and it won't be affected, but let them know to be on the safe side.

Anewuser · 23/12/2022 11:46

Let them know but ensure you stress this payment is for ? Weeks work and you don’t expect to earn again. They may try to argue and say they’ll suspend your carers allowance to investigate but stick to your guns.

Divide the £900 between the amount of weeks. As long it's under the c. 130 mark for earnings you'll be fine.

gamerchick · 23/12/2022 11:52

Tricky as it's one payment. If it was half one month and half the next it would have been fine. Can they maybe split the payment over a couple of months?

You need to ring them if not. Don't ignore it, they're proper hardcore if you go 1p over and they find out.

Thank you to you all for responding,

It's so confusing, I have been on the panel since March so well over 8 months now.

I don't want to get in trouble and struggle with this I feel I should just cancel the careers allowance if I had know it would be this stressful I would not have sat on the advice panel.

You don't need to cancel it, you haven't been paid yet. Just ring them, the carers people are one of the most helpful departments I've ever rung. They'll advise you.

TheFormidableMrsC · 23/12/2022 16:17

@Mum200900 Over 8 months absolutely does not breach your earnings limit. Call them, I'm sure they will advise.

NandoReindeer · 23/12/2022 16:20

They will look at the average spread out over the weeks. They did that with me, I didn’t put any time sheets in and then got about 10 weeks pay all at once but it averaged out to the right amount.

I wouldn’t bother notifying them, you are under the amount, just make a note of it for yourself.

Presumably you first can deduct work-related expenses from this £900 too, before calculating if you come under the threshold.
