Housing benefit and tax credits and extra money.... who do I tell?

I get both HB and WTC/CTC. Now obviously I have to let them know that I have just got some extra work/income, but how do I make sure that they don't both deduct the extra amount, leaving me condiserably worse off than before I got the extra income?

You have to tell both, the tax credits peopel will work out the difference in what they should pay and the housing benefit will work out what you are entitled to from them in relation to the tax credits.
Your hb is based on tax credits, so tell tax first, then let the HB know, when you get your adjusted award letter they will want to see it to decide how much to pay you.

Have you tried www.entitlesto.com to see how much the difference will be? It works out your tax credits and then the Hb/CB on the basis of those so you can see what its liekly to change to.

If you dont tell HB they can ask for a repayment so it's best to inform them that you will be changing and then pass on the award letter.

As LVS says, it isn't quite as simple as deducting the amount so you must tell both the council for HB and the WTC people.
