Do I just apply online?

Hello,

Living alone with my son, husband has gone abroad. He is still paying for the mortgage at the moment and giving me some month a month for my son. I had a look at Entitledto and it says I am entitled to some money, what do I do now, just go on the government website and put my details in? Will someone have to interview me to assess me? If it’s universal credit do I have to go to the job centre and prove to them I’m looking for work? I am trying to get back into work but need to sort childcare and get back on my feet first.

thank you.

Have you actually separated or is DH working abroad? Despite financially making no difference to your income, it makes a lot of difference to whether you can apply for benefits or not and they will check things like HMRC records to make sure you have really separated.

We’re still married but separated. How do I prove that?

Can he send you proof of the address he is registered to abroad? So for example utility bill or bank statement?
You can apply for UC on line its pretty simple as long as you are eligible.
What have you been living off since he has been abroad or does he pay you enough for food and bills as well as the mortgage?

There used to be a loop hole where even if you were still together if the husband was living abroad and registered abroad for tax, then you would have been eligible for tax credits (as it used to be). But I expect now UC has stopped this

I don’t think you need to prove you’re separated. They will take your word on it. Ensure you move bills to your name
