Tipping Taxi

Hope I've put this in the right place. I've just booked at taxi to take me on a journey about 1hr long then to collect me a few days later. I haven't ever travelled in a taxi before and they said I can pay half on the way there and half on the way back. I've been given a fixed price, do I tip the driver and if so do I tip him on each journey or just on the way back, as it will be the same driver. Also, if I tip how much should I give him? The total journey will cost about 100.

It's entirely up to you if you tip the driver. I'm more inclined to tip if the driver matches my mood - I usually like a chatty & friendly driver but not always.

I would say that you may want to tip on the way there & again on the way back - you may have been told it'll be the same driver, but in my experience, it sometimes isn't.

In terms of amount, not unlike a restaurant, I'm comfortable with 10%, but it's neither expected nor compulsory.

Yes, see what he's like first. I was a taxi operator for a long time, and my dh is a taxi driver - so I know how different they can be in terms of deserving of a tip. Don't ever feel like you have to.

Tips used to be a reward for good service. They've lost a lot of that meaning and in restaurants especially they're increasingly taken for granted. 10/15% service charges are also pretty common ( never tip on top of this') . If the taxi is clean, on time and the driver is helpful with luggage etc then a 10% tip is reasonable. Don't tip if these aren't happening.

Thanks for the replies. It's a one man firm so that's how I know it'll be the same driver. I'll tip 10 per cent on way there and way back. Thanks again.
