We are buying a new house (got to complete soon)and haven't sold ours yet...looks like we will have to get a bridging loan . Anyone have any views on them?

Yes - don't do it. Interest rates are higher than normal mortgage finance, and you could be left with two houses in teh event of a crash/downturn in the market. I'm not saying one will happen, but I would not ake the risk in the current environment.
Have you actually exchanged on the house you are purchasing yet?

yes it will hurt a lot .. do not do it if you haven't sold your house yet .. it could be months and you could lose money hand over fist

unless of course you can easily afford both mortgages or have looked into turning existing mortgage into buy-to-let and have secured tenants
