Adding a huge bill to current IVA

Was just wondering if anyone on here has been in a similar situation. I took out an IVA five years ago and have 1 year left. I’ve recently received a huge vet bill. Four thousand pound 😳. So was wondering if anyone has had this and they’ve let you add it to their IVA? I looked on their website it says you can but when I spoke to them today they said I can’t.

Can't you just pay the bill in instalments?
Did you get the vet treatment knowing you couldn't afford it? Not being goady at all I'm just surprised you can add recent bills to and IVA already in place

Batshittery · 08/09/2022 22:14

Surely the IVA covered debts 5 years ago. It would seem strange that you could run up further debt and just add it on

userxx · 08/09/2022 22:15

I don't think you'd be able to do that, you'll need to sort out a payment plan with the vet.

I'm in a IVA with just under 18 months to go. I've been told that adding any significant amount could start it again or atleast add on a few years. To prevent people running up more debt and trying to add it on at a later date they don't allow you to take out a loan/debt of more than £500 during the IVA. If it were say, a electricity bill or a water bill then they could consider it but unfortunately ots really unlikely they'll cover a vetbill :(

This is what comes up with creditfix

Adding a huge bill to current IVA

You can't add debts to an iVA at a later date, you can only have the ones included in your proposal at the beginning

rwalker · 08/09/2022 22:46

what about the vet

what about the vet

Hopefully they won't be £4k out of pocket and the op can sort a payment plan.

Best solution is to probably agree a payment plan to the vet and ask for your IVA to be varied to take that into account.

Have you also reviewed your IVA payment to take account of increases in food, energy, mortgage and petrol costs?

Depending on your budget and the amounts involved you may have to agree to extend the time you pay for.

It used to also be possible to remortgage your way out of an IVA. I did this about 20 years ago, the rate was less than 1% above the best available and after 2 years I was able to get a normal mortgage but I don't know if this is still possible in current mortgage market or an appropriate solution for you, but worth considering.

Thankyou for your replies. I didn’t get the treatment at all thinking I couldn’t pay it. I am insured but certain things weren’t covered and as my beloved cat was so so ill, I hadn’t even thought about the cost I just wanted him better. I’ve just spoken to the vets and they have agreed to a payment plan. I was just worried about having to pay this with the increased cost of living and the IVA I wouldn’t be able to afford it and end up in even more debt 😩

What a shame the treatment didn't work, you must be so upset. It's devastating losing a pet. 😞

Yes I’m absolutely gutted. The treatment seemed to be working then all of a sudden wasn’t. I couldn’t put him through it anymore. He was by my side since I first met him at 5 weeks old. Someone had dumped him in a bin. He was always with me. I can’t even explain my grief. Thankyou for your kind words xxx
