Abusive mother controlling banking

Hi everyone,

I am posting on behalf of my friend (23) who is wanting to leave home ASAP and cut off contact with her emotionally abusive mother. She has access to all of her own finances, bar her Help to Buy ISA.

Her mum made her send her money for her to 'deposit' into the account, but with a history of stealing my friend's cash, we don't know how much is currently in there. She believes it to be in her name, but equally, her mum could have put it in hers, due to neither having ever owned a home before. In hindsight, she obviously can see the error she has made in not checking the name the ISA was in, but when you're a child in an abusive parental relationship, it is hard to see the wood from the trees.

Any advice would be wonderful, thank you.

Can she check her gov gateway to see if there’s a link to it on there?

Or she needs to stay at home long enough to try and find out which bank it's in
