What small, mundane things have you stopped buying because you just can't afford them anymore?

I was just reading threadbandbthinking about shower gel and bath soaks.

I used to buy a couple of shower gels a week, £2ish ones and now I just buy bars of soap and will occasionally buy aldis own.

I also used to buy the rigid toothpaste tubes that have the push down button so the DC had a one push portion.
I just get the normal squeeze tubes now.

I used to get midrange shampoos and conditioners. Now it's Alberto Balsalm apple shampoo.

I don't buy bubble bath at all

I just little things but I miss having a nice bubbly soak and using a nice shampoo.

I haven't bought any moisturiser in a while either. I still have some soap and glody ones left but after that I will probably go without.

It's just surprising how in such a short space of time I've gone from buying these things as standard, without a thought, to cutting back on them even though they're quite basic things. Not fancy at all. 😩

Coconut water- £4 a carton!

Mushroo · 22/08/2022 17:08

Meat - I used to eat meat pretty much everyday and now I try and eat plant based 2/3 days a week.

Atmywitsend29 · 22/08/2022 17:13

Tampons. What a time to be alive.

Bluesky2507 · 22/08/2022 17:13

Kitchen roll - I've decided to just use washable cloths and towels instead. It's not that I can't afford it, but it will save me a few quid a month which is better than nothing!

AtomicBlondeRose · 22/08/2022 17:16

How were you using two shower gels a week? I’d still buy one big bottle of foam bath at 85p for a litre and use that sparingly. You could use it for shower gel too and it only needs a small amount in the bath - it would easily last a month and you’d still get your nice bath.

LilOnline · 22/08/2022 17:29

No more steak or chicken breast.
Instead cheaper cuts like chicken thighs / legs and also padding out meals with lentils/beans.

Dalaidramailama · 22/08/2022 17:32

Nothing yet but just cancelled my hair highlights due in September. I think the first to go will be the food goodies that are generally unhealthy for you anyway and not at all necessary.

Or get one of those shower puff things and your shower gel will go way further.

Gel nails. £20 a month I didn’t need to spend.

two bottles of shower gel a week?! WTAF were you Doing with it!

WhereAreMyAirpods · 22/08/2022 17:36

Switched to soap a few years ago and would never look back - because of the plastic bottles not because of the cash. Soap is SO much cheaper and so much nicer!

Riverlee · 22/08/2022 17:36

Avon order - used to buy something every month, partly to support Avon lady. I’ve stopped doing that now (and plan to use up what I have first).

Cheeselog · 22/08/2022 17:39

Yes, how on earth were you using so much shower gel? I’m still using one I got for Christmas!

CountFoscoslittlewhitemice · 22/08/2022 17:44

Gel pedicures every 3 weeks over the summer, bubble bath, random expensive skincare whenever I felt like it. Now get Aldi and Cerave.
Food wise I no longer buy punnets of soft fruit, chicken breasts, steak etc. we now have at least 3 meals a week based on lentils etc.
I think twice about using the car and try to use it as little as possible.

inflationhorror · 22/08/2022 17:51

I’m baking more rather than buying stuff. Staying in of course..

Going to sit down with the children and ask them what we could save on! Running out of ideas!

Antarcticant · 22/08/2022 17:54

Steak
'Nice' hand wash and bubble bath - just buying cheapest own brand now
Dreamies - the cats are on 'Pocket Pillows' now. They don't seem to mind, thankfully!

starpatch · 22/08/2022 17:58

Buying larger shampoo, always same brand. Don't buy bread products for myself use bread maker. Ditto don't buy things like nectarines for myself this year, mostly have apples, but buy for DS. Meat is once or twice a month. Dried beans instead of tins (use pressure cooker). Not buying any clothes for myself, clothes patched, don't suit my age ones I discarded 20 years ago and had to get out again.

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 22/08/2022 18:03

We haven’t bought meat in 20 years. Might have to ditch milk too if the price keeps rising so fast.

stopaskingmethat · 22/08/2022 18:06

Stopped buying mouthwash. It's bloody extortionate, although I've only really been pricing it in Boots and Tesco.

Also branded laundry capsules. Now I buy Aldi Almat. Also doubling up my fabric softener by splitting between two bottles and filling with water.

To be honest, my bedding smells nicer than before.

mac1974 · 22/08/2022 18:07

@Dalaidramailama I'm doing the same. It costs me £90 every 6-8 weeks as my roots come through so fast and I just can't do it. Home dye kits here we come.

Me too. The price of a veggie shop is still really expensive though!

converseandjeans · 22/08/2022 18:11

I started using soap for shower couple of years ago but more for the environment tbh. A bar lasts ages.

Buying less meat.

Using own brand of more produce.

Trying to use car less.

StarCourt · 22/08/2022 18:13

No
More chicken breasts I buy a kilo of drumsticks now. No more fruit punnets or Pink Lady apples. Now it's Saver grapes and Gala. No
More floor wipes either

Floydthebarber · 22/08/2022 18:13

Buratta, love it and used to buy one a week. Now buy maybe one a month as it costs £2.50-3.00. That is rather ridiculous for a small amount of delicious cheese.

I've also cut out fabric conditioner, I only really used it for blankets and dh's jumpers but it is unnecessary.
