What small, mundane things have you stopped buying because you just can't afford them anymore?

I was just reading threadbandbthinking about shower gel and bath soaks.

I used to buy a couple of shower gels a week, £2ish ones and now I just buy bars of soap and will occasionally buy aldis own.

I also used to buy the rigid toothpaste tubes that have the push down button so the DC had a one push portion.
I just get the normal squeeze tubes now.

I used to get midrange shampoos and conditioners. Now it's Alberto Balsalm apple shampoo.

I don't buy bubble bath at all

I just little things but I miss having a nice bubbly soak and using a nice shampoo.

I haven't bought any moisturiser in a while either. I still have some soap and glody ones left but after that I will probably go without.

It's just surprising how in such a short space of time I've gone from buying these things as standard, without a thought, to cutting back on them even though they're quite basic things. Not fancy at all. 😩

My OH used to work for a famous women's beauty/fashion magazine. Cosmetic companies would send in 100s of products to the staff in the hope of features and free advertising. I was told nothing worked, including face creams charging £100s. When a magazine votes a product "the best" all it means is that product company spent the most in advertising that month.

Cosmetics ARE A CON. You're not doing without anything giving these up.

I buy for the environment, no animal testing and what works. Get a 800g tub of Biona Raw Coconut oil. It's 100% natural and a fantastic makeup remover, face/body lotion and good for hair too. Mines lasted 2 years so far for £15.

I enjoy the whole skin care/ makeup routine even though I'm not expecting life changing results. I don't want your coconut oil... I'm quite happy with my own skincare and cosmetics although I can't deny there's little difference between the lower and upper price range products

I recently inherited my mum's cotton handkerchief collection. Simple switch and saves loads on tissues (which I will still use if I have a streaming cold, but if it's a case of hayfever or wiping DC's sticky mouth a cotton hanky is fine).

Reminds me: when was a girl I remember mum buying cotton handkerchiefs and we embroidered the corners with initials or little flowers to give relatives as good value xmas gifts :)

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 31/08/2022 10:53

I hate coconut oil. Made me hair feel crispy and gave my face spots.

No thank you.

What’s the alternative to a colour catcher, for the washing machine?

I don’t get how they work really…

verdantverdure · 04/09/2022 16:23

Calgon

verdantverdure · 04/09/2022 16:24

Not an alternative to colour catcher. Just a mundane thing I can't afford any more

Bubblyinblanch · 04/09/2022 18:27

I'm spending less on cosmetics and using the products I have for much longer.

Beepbeepenergy · 04/09/2022 21:58

do you guys shop at pound shop and the shop called one below
one below is my fav :)

Parkmama · 06/09/2022 16:13
  • soap instead of shower gel
  • Primark make up instead of Mac
  • Aldi skincare instead of Clarins
  • Supermarket mouthwash instead of Listerine
  • scaling back cleaning products after realising I was spending way too much due to Instagram influencers encouraging me to buy the pink stuff and scrub daddies etc
  • less meat and more veg based dinners
  • big blocks of value mature cheese, haven't noticed the difference whatsoever
  • encouraging kids to have leftover salad / pasta for their lunchboxes rather than sandwiches everyday
  • not buying any new clothes / shoes unless essential
  • take water flask and reusable coffee cup everywhere
  • use card factory for cards and be more organised so less spending £5 from moonpig in a panic
  • 0% alcohol beer (15 x becks from Home Bargains for £4.99!) alternative
  • library book borrowing instead of always ordering from Amazon
  • not replacing the tumble when it broke and being more patient as the washing dries naturally
  • less takeaways but plan similar from supermarkets like fish and chips and pizza etc
  • use car and bus less, cycle and walk more
abbarules · 06/09/2022 17:22

Also haven’t noticed any difference in value versus regular hard cheese! Win!

abbarules · 06/09/2022 17:24

Oh I’ve switched to aquafresh from whatever whitening or posher packaged toothpaste is on offer.

I predict Wilko and the pound shops will start to do much better…

verdantverdure · 06/09/2022 19:11

• not replacing the tumble when it broke and being more patient as the washing dries naturally

This is a good one for me @Parkmama I need to be disciplined about only doing one load at a time rather than having wet washing everywhere because I couldn't wait.

Sally99 · 06/09/2022 20:54

Take lunch to work
No new clothes
No pedicure
No snacks / crisps / biscuits in cupboard
Walk to work rather than bus
Weekend newspapers
Meat

Next to go is wine 😩 and Heinz baked beans 😩. Hate own brand

prettybird · 06/09/2022 20:58

I get the weekend papers from my dad Wink

felulageller · 07/09/2022 11:28

3 blade razors- cut to 2 and to the men's ones instead of the nicer looking women's ones
Grapes
Magazines
I don't think I'll be buying advent beauty boxes this year
Euromillions rollover lottery tickets
A new winter coat, if I see something nice in a charity shop, maybe but otherwise will do with what I have
No more cakes/ scones with a drink out.
I've bought some Nivea moisturizer rather than replacing my Estée Lauder
I've downgraded perfume to next/ M&S
I'll wear my contact lenses less
Prosecco only for special occasions
Long life OJ rather than Tropicana

mum2jakie · 11/09/2022 11:49

Trying to stop buying lunch on days in the office. Week one successfully completed! We've also switched down to own brand kitchen roll and are trying to use reusable cloths rather than kitchen roll in general.

DIanaRiggFan · 11/09/2022 12:27

No longer getting a mani/pedi
not bought clothes for years anyway so will continue with that
less new toys/clothes for DC and more second hand
from 26th (post holiday) giving up booze for health/weight reasons and gonna see how much of our grown produce we can live off to make the shopping cheaper (though cutting out booze will def reduce it a lot!)
always take work to lunch now and never buy coffee
no longer buying cakes out at cafes as they are never that good - will make at home to last the week
rather than ordering my child a birthday cake which can be anything up to £100, I’ve ordered a decorate your own from WR and ordered a decorating pack from Amazon. Total was about £15

IAmStupidFace · 11/09/2022 19:32

My DH has given up hot water as he only has freezing cold showers anyway (not me, I use tepid as I have very long hair and it's horrible when it drips down my back and it's freezing, plus it doesn't rinse out my conditioner well enough)

We both only use cold water to wash our hands (and soap of course) 20 degree wash for our clothes now but can't give up the dryer part on our washer dryer unfortunately.

Cut my own hair for years as they always took too much off. No hair colouring either as I also grew it out years ago. Haven't given up my Korean skincare though (I don't wear make up) that can be very expensive but we neither drink nor smoke nor socialise outside (we're home bodies) so we have to have some luxuries. For me it's skin care, for DH it's organic eggs, meat, fish and dairy. Mainly shop at M&S but their normal stuff is pretty reasonable and very similar in price to other supermarkets. M&S own brand household products too, they're slowly introducing more and they're also very reasonably priced.

Using the car a lot less. 1 weekly shop now lasts 8 days instead of 7. Cold food unless I'm desperate for something warm - rarely are. No takeaways, no Krispy Kreme's (M&S yum yums are almost as good).

Just need to sort out my Amazon habit now.

IAmStupidFace · 11/09/2022 20:10

Also, turned the boiler to water only and turned the temp down to 50 for and 55 for the radiators for when we do use them. Water is plenty hot enough. Means my daily kWh electric usage is averaging 3kwh and 6kwh when we do the washing once a week.

Because my post made even ME miserable, here are some free, or for-pennies moments DD and I have found over the last few months. They aren’t much, but there are something.

‘Treat’ Fridays. The cheapest bar of chocolate or pack of baked stuff Aldi has to offer, unlimited screen time and whatever DD wants to yak on about from Tik tok or Roblox to me. No bedtime. And hotdog sausages from a can. Sometimes a ‘disco’. Sometimes I do a treasure hunt for the chocolate. Sometimes she does me a quiz night. We’ve had one or two ‘all night’ gaming sessions. (She thought it was a huge treat)

A movie marathon on Saturday nights - I make pizza and we snuggle under blankets and watch whatever films we can find.
Spa Sundays. I make a face mask out of stuff out of the kitchen (oats and milk or olive oil and sugar. It doesn’t matter) paint her toenails for her, leave regular conditioner on longer and wrap in a towel. I let DD have a bath. I make meatless roast (just the trimmings), and she chooses a dessert to bake (apple crumble or jam tarts, usually)

To be honest, I could live without those. My small pleasures are tiny. But there are still some.

I try to walk the dogs at sunrise or sunset. There’s something special about a sunset. And we are lucky in that we have green spaces to walk in and breathe.

I take my morning coffee out into the sun if there is any. I have few flowers this year, but there are usually some bees and swifts to watch. I can’t feed the wildlife, but I can water them, and the birds and insects still come to the water. We had hedgehogs in the dry spell and I even saw my first (live) badger. DD loves to make ‘homes’ for wildlife out of whatever she can find in the garden, so that often keeps her occupied.

I make homemade bread (when I make pizza) to have with my vegetable soup for lunch. I freeze it, so it’s fresh all week. ‘Fresh‘ rolls are a real luxury that never gets old for me, and cost just pennies. DD likes to make novelty shapes with the dough. I add fresh herbs from the garden to my soups too. After lunch I meditate (which I suck at, but it’s free and it’s supposed to help) and make fresh mint tea with mint from my garden. Then I take a nap. Naps are free and feel very self-indulgent.

I am a keen gardener, although I have had to scale back, I’ve still had herbs, some veg and lots of fruit growing. Some veg is very cheap and easy to grow if you have even a little space. Strawberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, apples and lettuce and herbs are very easy, cheap to get started and are worth it. I’ve made soft fruit jams, ice lollies and random gin-based cocktails with blackcurrant and mint. No, it’s not fever tree tonic, but it’s something. Rosemary, thyme and Oregano add really lovely flavour to cheap veggies. Mint and chamomile make lovely tea. Chives and lettuce are a nice salad. Cooking Apples make lovely desserts. A few cheap cut flowers like cosmos or sunflowers are easy and would be very cheering (I never quite get it together with them myself)

We have board game nights once a week. DD is very competitive and loves Labyrinth, Clue and monopoly. I also try and keep a jigsaw going. We each do bits when we are passing or chatting. I sell them on market place when we are done and buy another one, and a relative gave us a load we are working through. We do stargazing lying out in the garden and DD has an app to learn the names of constellations. (She’s into really vacuous astrology stuff, so she thinks it’s interesting)

My mum bought me huge bottles of bergamot and lavender essential oil for my birthday. I put a few drops on a tissue in my drawers to scent my clothes, as they are my favourite smells. I sprinkle them on old rags and stuff them behind radiators to scent rooms, too.

I line dry my bedsheets whenever it’s sunny and change my sheets on a Sunday. Fresh, line dried sheets smell wonderful and feel like a real treat to me.

I do yoga with Adrienne or Sarah Beth on YouTube at bedtime. Not quite a class, but not bad and it does feel good.

I follow a couple of YouTubers. Mainly flower farms and gardeners and some Vanlife travels. I suppose it’s the ‘influencer’ thing, but they are free entertainment (I used to get magazines) and it’s something new. You have to put up with ads, but at least it means they get paid for their content and I don’t need to part with cash.

if I have to go anywhere - an appointment or anything - I find something free nearby. A new walk or some ruins or something. We take a picnic or hot chocolate and cake and have a day exploring. Very occasionally we get a bag of chips and take them to a lake or somewhere. (I used to take our camper away for free nights in the Britstop scheme and do less local national trust days out or random free stuff, but the petrol is too expensive now, so we have to stay local)

Our dogs. They aren’t free, but we already had them and they get me out, Dd adores them and training them, walking them, petting them and laughing at their goofy antics is worth a lot. We also go to monthly breed meets which DD loves and is only £3.

Tiny pleasures, I know. But they’ve kept me going through the leanest of times and they are something. Some of them I’ll keep going. Some I hope to replace with more luxurious luxuries one day very soon. I can’t wait to have a hot bath, a proper G and T, a decent steak (or fish and chips!) and buy the latest book from one of my favourite authors! But in the meantime, clean sheets and fresh rolls will tide me over.

Your DD is very lucky.

Can you adopt me please?

WhatASmashingBlouseYouHaveOn · 20/12/2022 20:02

Stopped Using the commercial car wash places, instead I get some car shampoo and a bucket of warm water and sponge and do it myself. Also its good exercise 😊

verdantverdure · 21/12/2022 00:02

I just realised I've stopped buying orange juice. I might get some in for Christmas, except I'm scared everyone will realise how much they've missed it and I'll have to start buying it again. Xmas Grin

rattlecans · 22/12/2022 14:48

For those looking for a cheap/free book alternative, you could try epdf for downloading ebooks to your kindle. Then use Calibre software ( free download and to use ) to convert from pdf to the format you use.

Appleabananasandpears · 24/12/2022 23:31

Stopped buying bubble bath and shower gel (only used bar soap) until I discovered Aldi. Have now switched from Sainsburys to Aldi for majority toiletries and household cleaning products. I also find that things like cheese and sweetcorn are now a luxury, I usually just stick to pasta and some sauce. Also no longer buy fizzy drinks as these too feel like a luxury.

verdantverdure · 26/12/2022 09:53

Yeah, I'm no longer chucking a nice looking bath oil or pretty hair clips/body butte/nail varnish/lipstick/vase/cushion in the trolley willynilly without a thought like I might usually do. We've gone back to bar soap too. Since we have one in every drawer we won't have to buy any for a while.

I'm also considering going back to brow pencil because they are the cheapest brow filling in option and last years.
