Student loan

Hi, not sure if this is the correct place to post this!

I’m just wondering - does anybody know if an ex spouse is obliged to pay the student loan of their ex if they were financially supporting them during the marriage? The student loan was taken out before the marriage.

Thank you!

The person who's name the loan is in is responsible for paying it. Unless it was agreed as part of a divorce settlement that it was to be considered a joint debt, then I can't see how an ex can be responsible.

No. As it was taken out before the marriage, it cannot be considered a joint debt and I wouldn’t let a divorce settlement name it as one. Only if you were a guarantor on your ex’s loan are you liable.

Thank you both! I thought that but wanted to check.
