can i just say that I am well-p'd off. Hired a book keeper to sort out all the CRAP of papers that have built up since I've been self-employed, moved house, had a fire, had a baby and lost the will to file and folder in date order.

Bookkeeper cost 1k

Bookkeeper sent excel to accountant who has just written to me

your bookkeeper made mistakes so I had to rework it all. you owe THEM 8k and me 500 pounds....

bugger. you should have a look at what the mistakes were though - it's possible the accountant is wrong.

My friend is a self employed book-keeper. I think that if you have an accountant to check it the accounts over then that is where the responsibility stops with the accountant. If that makes sense.

Also, £500 isnt that much for an accountant to charge when they have had to rework it. Most charge that sort of sum just for looking it over, even if its accurate.

Who do you owe the 8k to ? I agree with Senora that you need to see exactly what was incorrect and you can then take the matter up with the bookkeeper - depending on what happened and if they are qualified they should have some professional indemnity insurance {not sure if you can get PI ins if you aren't qualified } which may cover any losses you incur.

my bosses accountant worked out my pay and tax and every associated with paying me (SLC etc) wrong as well

pankhurst · 20/01/2008 09:54

i think i will - now that i have calmed down enough to talk to him!

I was on mumsnet and happily typing away when i opened the letter....

it made me see red that he hadn;t even phoned me last week to say "oh btw this needs reworking cos it's not right - are you ok for me to do that?"

it's just not very accountable...

8k owed to HMRC, YIKES -

will now go onto good housekeeping thread and halve my budgets for everything else for the rest of our lives.
