£99 taken out of bank for £20 petrol Asda

hellsbells9 · 03/08/2022 15:06

I put £20 in my car on Friday at Asda pay at pump. I know it says something about authorizing £99, however ever since then the £99 has been taken out my bank (it's in pending transactions but the money has still been taken and I'm unable to use it) as well as the separate £20 transaction. This has never happened before and I'm getting concerned now. I don't use this very often so not sure how exactly it works but I really need that £99 now to pay bills and I can't have it just sat pending. Anyone know more about this or what I can do? Is it worth contacting bank?

I think it’s because you used a CREDIT card and not a cash card.
They’re a bit more risky for the seller because the money comes out of your account at a later date when there might not be funds to cover it.

Same reason for not informing you of the ring fencing. You don’t actually pay out that money as the CC bill comes to you later. In my case it’s a minimum of 15 days (31st July to 15 August for example).

This only applies to self service. Pay with CC at the cash desk and all goes normally.

And paying with DEBIT card or cash card doesn’t do it as your card would be denied without the funds being available.

I’m happy to be corrected, of course!

Yes you are incorrect. The signs at the pay at pump say that £99 will be reserved and that applies to debit cards as well as credit cards. When you finish fueling the actual amount will be debited and the £99 hold should be removed. In OPs case the £99 reserve hasn't been removed from her account after fueling

It's been taken away from my available balance, so yes it has came out, thanks.

Your available Credit Card balance, yes.
Car hire often does the same thing as a guarantee, meaning you can’t use up to the limit on your card.
I have a second credit card that I only use for car hire booking and payment.

It's not a credit card
It hasn't left OPs bank account but it is reserved from her available balance so although the money is in her account she can't spend it as there is 'hold' on the funds stopping her from using it.

If its pending, its not been taken. I recently had this at a holiday site, they don't actually take it

Sgtmajormummy · 03/08/2022 16:25

OK, just ignore my comments then.
🙂

This has happened to me this morning, I put 25 in and the 99 come out of my available balance, still says pending for the whole amount. Really hoping it comes back in tomorrow 😩 I feel for you OP am also on a low income and will need the money back asap.

Hope you get it sorted, it's really annoying x

They don’t take it but it comes off your available balance so effectively that’s money you cannot use. Usually it doesn’t take long to go back onto your balance but if it’s more than a few days it’s a nightmare if your balance is getting lower and you could really use that £99.

Daisyhoney · 03/08/2022 16:34

Sgtmajormummy just wanted to correct you on a few points.
The op hasn't specified that she used a credit card but even if she had, it would still need to have the £99 authorised by the card provider because if there were insufficient funds available it would take her over her limit so would be declined. Also the payment would debit the credit card account just as quickly as a debit card transaction from a current account - it doesn't come out at a later date although obviously you pay the bill at a later date and if you can't clear in full then that's a different matter.
There is no risk to the seller because as I said the credit card company can decline if the transaction would take her over the limit.
Cash cards can't be used anyway - they are for cash points only.
( I used to work in a bank )

I see, well I can't imagine they will hold it for long

SirenSays · 03/08/2022 16:36

Does it matter if its taken or pending if OP can't use it for days either way.

Daisyhoney · 03/08/2022 16:39

Sorry posted after op stated it wasnt a credit card - my original post took a while to type out

hellsbells9 · 03/08/2022 16:39

@Happyandyouknowit83 are you seriously still here going on, are you bored? Just move yourself on, honestly. Money is clearly a serious for many people at the moment. I could do without your stupid and pointless comments.

Yep exactly, it makes no difference I'm still unable to access the money.

It happens often. There will be nothing your bank can do. I just use a credit card or pay the cashier now.

daffodilandtulip · 03/08/2022 16:41

This happened to me in store with Asda. The bank said there was nothing they can do, and I had to wait 28 days for it to "drop off".

Why are you all being horrible , the OP already said she is on low income, the £99 while pending means she can't use it. What if she needed it for essentials. 5 days is outrageous. Depending on what time of the month it was I wld struggle to cover this.

amusedbush · 03/08/2022 16:47

Tippexy · 03/08/2022 16:35

The money can't be touched so whether or not it's in the account is completely irrelevant.

£99 is a significant chunk of money to most people and arguing over semantics with your smug laughing emoji doesn't change the fact that OP can't use the money.

Some people on this thread are just being dicks for no reason.

dementedpixie · 03/08/2022 16:49

The bank should be able to remove the earmark from the funds. I dont know why they're being so obstructive

Twilightimmortal · 03/08/2022 16:49

I agree OP, if its pending or not its still unusable.

If you topped up your petrol and needed the rest for shopping that day or the day after you couldn't use it.

The fact that it will come back eventually doesn't stop the fact that it is a huge inconvenience.

For some reason people think that you finding it an inconvenience means that you do not understand that the money is pending and will come back.
