£99 taken out of bank for £20 petrol Asda

I put £20 in my car on Friday at Asda pay at pump. I know it says something about authorizing £99, however ever since then the £99 has been taken out my bank (it's in pending transactions but the money has still been taken and I'm unable to use it) as well as the separate £20 transaction. This has never happened before and I'm getting concerned now. I don't use this very often so not sure how exactly it works but I really need that £99 now to pay bills and I can't have it just sat pending. Anyone know more about this or what I can do? Is it worth contacting bank?

This happened to me last week at Asda. The money went back in the following day.

I'll not be using the self serve again!

hellsbells9 · 03/08/2022 15:08

Just to be clear the £20 fuel that I actually put in is no longer pending, but the £99 is and has been taken from Tom available balance.

I definitely won't be using this service again either, it's been 5 days now so really concerned.

Tesco do this also but the money is usually credited back the same or next day

TheYearOfSmallThings · 03/08/2022 15:10

I heard of this happening in Morrisons too. The money will come back into your account, but they will now only allow fueling if £99 is cleared (because that is the maximum you could take).

There should be a sign explaining it.

Hugasauras · 03/08/2022 15:10

That's how it works now. They ring-fence £99 and then the actual amount comes out. However the £99 should be released very quickly.

From Asda website:

'How long will the money be held for?
Once the transaction is complete and you’ve finished filling up your car, your card issuer should release any unused money almost immediately. However, it’s been reported that in some instances it may take longer for the amount to reappear on your banking app. If this is the case, we first recommend refreshing your banking app. If this doesn’t resolve the issue, and you’re concerned that the held money isn’t reappearing in your account, you should contact your issuing bank for guidance. They’ll be aware of these changes and will be able to advise you. Asda will only charge you for the value of the fuel.'

TheYearOfSmallThings · 03/08/2022 15:10

5 days is very unusual though.

Hugasauras · 03/08/2022 15:11

This explains how it works.

At five days, I would contact your bank though

What is changing?
In the past, all pay-at-pump transactions would check that a customer’s bank account had at least £1 available before filling up. This then allowed customers to fill up to £99, with the final amount charged to their account (normally the day after) and the £1 pre-authorisation fee returned.
Under the new rules imposed by Visa and Mastercard last year, the pre-authorisation amount is changing from £1 to £99. Eventually, every pay-at-pump filling station in the UK will adopt the new system where, instead of £1, up to £99 will be temporarily held while you fill up your car. Once you’ve finished refuelling, the remainder of the unused funds will be released back to your account straight away, and you’ll only be charged for the value of the fuel you have taken.

SheWoreYellow · 03/08/2022 15:11

Yes, after five days definitely phone your bank.

MakeadealwithGod · 03/08/2022 15:11

I’ve never heard of that. Are all the supermarkets doing it?

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 03/08/2022 15:16

Call your bank. They should be able to reverse the pending transaction now the actual payment has debited.

hellsbells9 · 03/08/2022 15:18

Thanks all will ring bank right away.

What happens if you have less than £99 in the bank? Would that mean you could never put fuel in your car?

If you go into the garage to pay rather than at pump it only takes the actual amount.

hellsbells9 · 03/08/2022 15:53

The bank basically told me there's nothing they can do on there end and I need to wait until the 11th! Disputed this and they've just told me I need to ring Asda and get them to send the bank an email authorising the payment to be released. I'm not very hopeful at all, feel like they will just pass me from pillar to post. I'm actually furious about this and will never use this service again.

£99 is ridiculous. Several days of the month I wouldn't even have that available!!

Exactly I'm already on maternity leave with very low income as it is so it's left me really short. What an absolute fart on! Angry

This is why I never use pay at pump for petrol. I know for some it’s unavoidable, unfortunately.

It's been taken away from my available balance, so yes it has came out, thanks.

I think it’s because you used a CREDIT card and not a cash card.
They’re a bit more risky for the seller because the money comes out of your account at a later date when there might not be funds to cover it.

Same reason for not informing you of the ring fencing. You don’t actually pay out that money as the CC bill comes to you later. In my case it’s a minimum of 15 days (31st July to 15 August for example).

This only applies to self service. Pay with CC at the cash desk and all goes normally.

And paying with DEBIT card or cash card doesn’t do it as your card would be denied without the funds being available.

I’m happy to be corrected, of course!

Your available Credit Card balance, yes.
Car hire often does the same thing as a guarantee, meaning you can’t use up to the limit on your card.
I have a second credit card that I only use for car hire booking and payment.

hellsbells9 · 03/08/2022 16:19

@Happyandyouknowit83 literally the most pointless and unhelpful comment, why even bother?

OP posts:
hellsbells9 · 03/08/2022 16:20

It was my debit card not a credit card. I don't own a credit card.
