With SSE on variable tariff. Thinking of fixing? Advice?

Are they even offering a fix? British gas have completely removed anything but variable tariff.
With the price cap being presumed to be £3500 a year, surely fixing at anything above £290 a month you'll be paying more than staying on variable?
