Expat credit rating

I've been an expat for almost 10 years now. I have just realised I must have a really bad credit rating in the UK? As I haven't had any contracts or payments for ages, since I left.

I'm thinking of returning in a couple of years and was wondering if anyone knows any way I can improve my credit score from abroad? I was thinking to get a really crap credit card (one that accepts basically anyone - my friend did this to improve his credit rating) and making online purchases for family every month/asking family to use it for me and pay it off each month? Would this help?

Any other ideas?

I'm a bit clueless about these things as fairly young when I left and don't use loans/credit cards here.
