Anyone think councils are trying to push us into debt by accident?
I have 2 separate bank accounts one to pay bills and direct debits that come off at odd times. The other for daily use. I rarely check my bills one, just now and then to see its not in the red.
I've noticed my council tax has not been collected since April. I contacted the council in April and they told me its been paid. I asked are you sure?? And they confirmed it had been. I explained it hasn't come out my bank. They again said its definitely been paid.
It's now July and it's still not been collected. To make matters worse they are now telling me there's a substantial credit on my previous address and they have closed it properly and transferred it to my current year which now has it all paid up for the year. Sounds great right??
I know for a fact I've paid nothing since April, I also know my previous address was closed as I got a refund from it the year it was closed. So I think some poor person has possibly put a typo in their reference number and has been paying my council tax. I asked if this was possible and they asked me to confirm what bank my council tax was paid from and I use a fairly common one and I was told yup everything looks fine. They are also going to send a letter to confirm this.
Do I keep pushing this? I worry that someone else might be getting debt letters about their council tax, or I spend this money that they said I don't owe them, then this time next year they tell me I'm owe last year's plus this year's council tax cause they mucked up? Obviously I won't spend it as I'm pretty sure they will notice the mistake whenever the person who is accidently paying my council tax notices.
