Carers Allowance when person passed away

Bluecatsforever · 30/06/2022 16:39

I was a carer for an elderly gentleman (95 years old)
He was a husbands site family relative.
Sadly he passed away in the hospital where he was taken following a injury to the brain from a fall.
I understand my career allowance job and allowance ends on the day of the hospital admittance and the death? ( he sadly passed away the very same day he was admitted)
Can someone confirm it and what please to do now?
Do I need to contact Carers Allowance department?
As on the letter from them it say I need to report all changes.
The death and all was already reported by other close members of family officially.
thank you.

Find any correspondence from the CA, ring the number given and tell them.

Wellthatsjustswell · 30/06/2022 17:00

Yes tell them, DM thought they would know when various depts were informed of DGM death and was then surprised that they weren’t.
sorry for your loss Flowers

How sad for you. RIP elderly gentleman. Daffodil

gamerchick · 30/06/2022 17:07

Do it now before you owe them money. They won't automatically know.

Babyroobs · 30/06/2022 17:15

How long had he been in hospital before dying? His disability benefit would only stop if he had been in for 28 days. Ordinarily there is a run on of carers allowance after a death but not sure what happens if they have been in hospital.

Bluecatsforever · 30/06/2022 17:27

@Babyroobs he wasn’t at all in hospital before the accident.
He fell at home , got called for ambulance and they took him into the hospital , where he passed few hrs later- the same day.
thank you all. He was a lovely man - wise and very smart til the end…

When my relative died, DWP were informed of their death using the 'tell us once' system when the death was registered at the registrars. DWP automatically knew that there was carers allowance paid out to me and wrote advising when payment would cease. If i remember correctly you are entitled to payment for 6 weeks after the person dies. The deceased's benefits stop straight away though and as it is paid part in advance the DWP may ask for the return of part of their PIP/DLA/AA.

alexdgr8 · 30/06/2022 17:53

you must inform the DWP at once.
ring them up.
sorry for your loss.

Sorry for your loss. I think you should get an eight week run on of the carers allowance after a death.

Bluecatsforever · 30/06/2022 18:44

@bigbluebus thank you.
I assume as he died in the hospital, the relevant departments would be notified officially, so I think DWP would know of this too.
Oh i did not know about the extra 6 wks payment, I remember I read somewhere years ago that if the person I cared for dies, my monthly allowance is a paid 3 weeks in advance each month, then I have to contact them asap to avoid returning it or getting penalised.

@Babyroobs I did not know this either, I actually thought I will have to return the monthly allowance I got paid 2 weeks ago as apparently they pay in advance of few weeks.
thank you

A hospital will not let the DWP know of a death. When the death certificate is given to relatives, they are usually given the number of the tell us once service so the family can call and this will cancel benefits, inform the DVLA ( if applicable ) etc.

Hwory · 30/06/2022 19:01

I’m sorry for your loss.

Yes you need to report this. The family may have used the tell us once service but it’s always best to report yourself to avoid an overpayment.

Theres an eight week run on for deaths.

bigbluebus · 30/06/2022 19:01

@Bluecatsforever As Babyroobs says the hospital will not do that. They will produce a certificate which the next of kin needs to take to the Registrar to register the death. It is the registrar who will ask if the NOK want to use the Tell us Once service - which I highly recommend as it cuts out a lot of work.

Bluecatsforever · 30/06/2022 19:13

@Babyroobs thank you.
Just spoke to the gentleman’s son, he said that already all was reported it do DWP etc- stopped all payments, ppi, pension, carer benefit allowance and my career allowance was all stopped too, so I don’t need todo anything apparently.

gamerchick · 30/06/2022 21:51

I'd still ring them to make sure.

Bluecatsforever · 01/07/2022 13:30

@Babyroobs hi, me again. In regards the 8 weeks running of the payments, do I need to apply for it or they will just keeping paying for up to 8 weeks?
The son of the gentleman already reported all changes and stopped my carer allowance running saying that I don’t need any extra 8 weeks anymore as I do not provide any care anymore now.
I’m shocked and disappointed as well.

I would ring carers allowance yourself to check. I'm sure everyone is entitled to the run off and the son cannot stop it because it is your benefit not his and therfore he cannot speak to carers allowance about it only inform them of the death and that PIP has stopped, but the only way you will know is by ringing them.

I'm pretty sure it should run on automatically.

bigbluebus · 03/07/2022 10:29

Mine carried on automatically. I got a letter from DWP telling me the date the last payment would be made and how much it would be.
I don't think the other person can instruct them to stop your payment. He can only advise that the person you were caring for has died and therefore his benefits should stop. As yours will be linked to that then DWP will automatically work out when your payment will end.

Bluecatsforever · 11/07/2022 07:51

@bigbluebus
hello, thank you.
I spoke to DWP last week, of course the passing was not reported yet, so I reported it.
My carer allowance payment was due today, was expecting a tiny bit that I am still due- sadly received 0 today, which left me without any money to cover my bills this week, I was hoping the 8 weeks extra payment would run on, so it would greatly help me to sort myself out, to find another job asap..
When I rang them they said a decision has to be made if I’m even eligible so confused as read here it’s continious..
