When a tenancy ends does it automatically go to a month to month agreement if the tenant gives notice but needs to stay for weeks/months after the end?

Yes, at the end of the fixed term it automatically becomes a periodic tenancy, the period starting normally on rent payment day, e.g.1st month.

This is case even if notice has been given by tenant or landlord. The tenancy basically continues on this periodic basis until vacant possession given up or a bailiff enforces a warrant of possession following a court order.

As a landlord I am flexible when people need to stay an extra week or 2 at the end of a tenancy - it can be tricky for tenants to line up moving dates, and I wouldn't want to add to any stress - I only expect them to pay pro rata. I think this is very reasonable and fair for both.
