Child help and a mortgage?

Hi there,
I'm new to this and me and my partner are currently about to start IVF fingers crossed and we're currently renting a flat in Bristol. We both work full time but are in low income jobs. My dad has said recently that he can help us with the deposit for somewhere. My question to you all is- can you do both at the same time? Can we get any financial help when I will have to be at home with the baby? Do mortgage people accept that this will happen and is there any universal credit to help?

Thank you xx

Are you at an age where you need to start IVF ie mid 30s? If not I'd get financially settled before having children.

You'll get whatever maternity pay or start maternity pay you're entitled to and child benefit. Depending on wages it sounds likely you'll get child tax credit / working tax credit elements of UC too. You won't get the equivalent towards Mortgage as you would rent

Thanks for your replies. Yes, we have to start IVF now. We have been on a long journey and biologically, this is the time to do it. Preferably we'd have bought before but it wasn't financially doable.

Ideally get your mortgage through and get moved in before you get pregnant then. Lenders look at affordability and it's hugely reduced if you have a baby. Once you've got the mortgage and have moved in you can take a payment holiday.

I'm not an expert in benefits but I get child benefit and my salary is late 40s. I also got help with nursery fees before DD turned 3. So if your DP is on a low income I'd expect you'd get something. Not sure when you'd be expected to go back to work.
