Hello
So I've just been accepted for carers allowance as I'm caring for my mum, I don't live with her tho.

I emailed housing benefit over a week ago to inform them of the change because I was currently affected by the benefit cap so I go 50p a week. ( I was on old style benefits due to being a lone parent)
I hadn't received a response so I phone housing benefit to be told my email was in a queue and to wait, but she said she has never head of someone being exempt from the cap for claiming carers and to basically ignore the online calculators because they are inaccurate!!

Do you receive universal credit?

www.gov.uk/benefit-cap/when-youre-not-affected this links say that if you get UC because you care for someone with a disability, you're exempt from the benefit cap.

You’re also not affected by the cap if you, your partner or any children under 18 living with you gets:

Adult Disability Payment (ADP)
Armed Forces Compensation Scheme
Armed Forces Independence Payment
Attendance Allowance
Carer’s Allowance

I’ve copied this from the link above.

It's a change of circumstances I think, so they might want to change you onto UC. (Disclaimer Ex CAB but am out of date)

I don't think claiming carers allowance will switch you to UC. You are not making a new claim for one of the benefits which Uc replaces. I may be wrong but I don't think it will.
