Lower than usual Child Benefit Payment

Hi,
just wondering if anyone could possibly explain why my monthly child benefit payment would be lower than usual?
i recieve £145 for 2 children born after 6/4/2017, every 4 weeks on a Monday.
i have it paid into my monzo so I can usually see it 3 days before, we are on holiday at the moment so thought I would just check the account.
it’s telling me HMRC deposit is +36.25.

I have no idea why, I have a new job but we earn less than £50K between us?

i havent had any notification that it would change.
can anyone advise?

thanks!

Me too! It seems to only be one week’s payment instead of 4 weeks. No change in my circumstances, and I definitely haven’t asked for it to be changed to weekly. It’s reassuring that I’m not alone. I plan to wait until the following week to see what happens then before facing calling them.

Hwory · 26/05/2022 11:58

If you call the CB line there’s an automated message that explains it.

basically because of the BHs it’s an early broken up payment.

StillUp · 26/05/2022 12:09

Thanks Hwory, I thought it must be something like that.

Even if it was due to be paid before the bank holiday? My payment was due to go in this coming Monday.

Oh I just realised, this coming Monday was meant to the bank holiday wasn’t it?

Phew. I've just come on here to see if anyone had posted with the same thing. So they are treating Monday as a BH (even though it isn't) and we have a week's payment now with a month's payment to follow the next week?

Notcoolmum · 26/05/2022 16:04

Just rang the helpline and the recorded message says for those paid monthly a week's payment is being made on Friday with the remaining payment to be made on Monday 30th.

DoubleShotEspresso · 27/05/2022 00:11

Is this why I've just received £21.80 as opposed to £84??? 😭

DoubleShotEspresso · 27/05/2022 00:12

Shit a bit of warning would have been nice

StillUp · 27/05/2022 03:11

We wouldn’t have received any of it until Monday anyway though usually, so we’ve actually got a little bit early rather than any of it late. Still gave me a shock when I looked though!

Mine would normally arrive late tonight so unsure as to whether that'll still happen with the remainder?! Oh well....
What a strange method seems such a nonsense to run run two batches of payments though?

lilroo87 · 27/05/2022 07:20

Glad I'm not alone. Saw it in my bank this morning just for one week and thought it was odd but assumed it was due to BH

Seriously79 · 27/05/2022 07:23

I thought I was going mad this morning! Came on here to ask the same question.

Normally paid on a Tuesday, due next Tuesday, and had £36 ish paid today.

GinaDonatella · 27/05/2022 07:32

Really odd was of doing it and not communicating it where is the logic?

EnglishGirlApproximately · 27/05/2022 07:40

On the gov.uk website it says that if your normal payment is due on Monday 30th, you'll receive a partial payment of one weeks worth today and the rest on Monday. Strange way of doing it as surely its increasing the workload to split into two Payments!

Crazyducklady · 27/05/2022 07:51

My payment was due today but I still only got a bit of it. So glad I stumbled on this thread - I had no clue what was going on either! I hope the rest shows up on Monday. It will be late by then.

DrHildegardeLanstrom · 27/05/2022 07:58

Very strange approach

StillUp · 27/05/2022 08:15

DoubleShotEspresso the payments are always Monday or Tuesday unless it’s a bank hol, but certain banks seem to clear it on a Friday for some reason. Mine does the same. My first smaller payment has cleared and the next bigger one is now showing as pending so it might well clear tonight too.

Yes aware of this my bank always seems to pay early (by Saturday morning).
What an utterly baffling and senseless thing to do though, with no warning? Why pay for two payment runs? It's just senseless isn't it?

StillUp · 27/05/2022 09:57

Yes I can’t work out why they’ve done it either. Weird.

DrHildegardeLanstrom · 27/05/2022 12:24

As far as I recall this has never been done before

Bacardi101 · 27/05/2022 12:26

Glad you posted this OP as I saw this this morning and got worried!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 27/05/2022 12:30

Thanks, Hwory, I was concerned about this as well.

I didn't think about the bank holiday (although we receive it on a Friday, so not a BH anyway, and was expecting the normal amount today).

I wondered if it was some kind of 'balancing' payment to kind of realign the usual four-weekly payment cycle with the calendar month.

Sodie · 27/05/2022 12:33

I'm worried now that even though mine is due Tuesday I haven't had any money go on? Anyone else not had it (just to put my overly anxious mind to rest)

DoubleShotEspresso · 29/05/2022 12:59

@Sodie mine all went in as normal....
Am hoping they don't mess about with DLA and carers allowance which are both due over the jubilee bank holidays.
I'd hope if your payment is scheduled for Tuesday it should be fine.
