Shared parental leave, who pays?

My husband and I will be sharing our parental leave. He will be taking five weeks at the same time as me when I reach my 28th week of maternity. His work is saying they don't need to pay him any shared parental leave pay during this time as I am still planning to take at least 39 weeks of maternity (I will finish maternity after 47 weeks instead of the 52). Is this right? Or should they be paying him for the five weeks he takes off while my work will be paying for the other 34 weeks of statutory maternity allowance I have? Neither of our workplaces are very knowledgeable about shared parental leave and it is becoming a bit of a headache.

Shared leave is a nightmare

You can both be paid shared parental leave at the same time but you cant stay on maternity leave and your partner be on shared from what i understand. Youd need to curtail your mat leave and move to shared leave to enable him to have his 5 weeks off.
