Child benefit

Hello,

First timer here 😁

My son was born on 03/02/22. It took a little while for us to register the birth and then to send off the form, he was around 9 or 10 weeks old. No worries i thought, as it says it will be backdated 12 weeks.

That was around 5 weeks ago and we haven't had anything through. Checked the website and it says that new applications are taking up to 16 weeks processing time!

Does anyone know if when it gets processed it will be backdated for the 19 weeks from when we applied plus the money for the processing weeks?

They surely can't expect people to apply as soon as the child is born, and even then if it takes 16 weeks they would be 4 weeks out of pocket?

Or am I missing something 🤔

Thanks in advance
Nat x

Backdating with benefits is usually the period of time before you make your application.

That's what I hoped but I wondered if anyone had been in the same situation and could clarify their experience 😀

It’s 12 weeks from application date.

I applied around 10 weeks too and got the money for 10 weeks (ish, they do it from the Monday after the baby is born) plus the weeks it took to process. Think it was around 4 weeks for us. Just be aware - I got the money in my account long before I received any paperwork! So keep checking the bank account rather than the post Smile

hi, I was wondering when backdating for your first payment did they pay 3 months backdated plus the first payment or was it just the three months

thank you

Lockdownmamas · 18/05/2022 18:23

Hi
if baby is 5 months old and you are making a child benefit application but it can only be backdated 3 months, does it include the month you’re applying or is it 3 months plus the one month? Thank you

LilacPoppy · 18/05/2022 18:31

@Lockdownmamas its three months from the day you apply , so you apply May 18th they backdate you February 18th.

Lockdownmamas · 18/05/2022 18:59

So sorry I know I’m being daft. So would it be 3 months backdated and then the month I applieds payment?

Ahh good to know, thanks. It is currently 6 weeks since we sent it off so hoping to hear something soon! Apparently it takes up to 16 weeks at the moment 😑

@Lockdownmamas CB is paid in arrears so you would get three months worth and then the month you were due in the future. So you would only miss out on one months payment.
