Rising costs

I am really starting to worry about rising costs. Food, petrol, energy. It’s all starting to add up and my monthly salary just doesn’t seem to go very far.

Anyone else feeling the same?

Not exactly worried, but from reading threads on here, I realise how extravagant I am, and much money I waste every month, and that it's not going to be sustainable going forward.
It's brought to my attention that things I deemed essential are actually luxuries.

Fortunately not worried as such as at present I’m not paying rent (living in my ex’s house with the kids whilst he’s overseas working for a few years) so I’m able to save money for a house of my own. But it is frustrating all the additional costs. I’m working 6 days per week at the moment, overtime on a Saturday though I’m now getting hammered on the tax so not sure it’s worth that much. When that stops I am considering getting a 2nd job so I can continue to save. I know I’m fortunate in that respect and that’s certainly not always been the case. I had my eldest child when I was a teenager so lived on a tight budget for many years. I do fear for many people as there isn’t a few hundred pounds left over after housing / utilities and food. It’s just not sustainable

I, for one, am absolutely terrified! I've been doing a lot of research into how to cut everything down to the absolute minimum. You are not alone.

Not me, tbh we've been struggling for a good while now so it's just more of the same. Some of my friends are starting to feel the pinch now but mostly they're in a position where they can absorb the extra costs.

Yes. For me we don't have much money, but I occasionally buy things like decorations for Easter / halloween / Christmas as it cheers us up. When you can't even make staying home all the time a bit different you are in hard times . We are tight on food budgets and buy own brand or offer stuff. Just changed our one car for a lower monthly payment.

But a lot of people who feel the pinch spend a lot day to day.

I've been growing my own herbs from seed. Partly because it's good for my mental health, but partly when I add some chilli flakes and some homegrown coriander into my cheapest brand tomato soup, I don't feel quite as miserable. Haha.

kathleen567 · 07/04/2022 15:01

That’s a lovely idea. I know whilst it’s possible to absorb some of the costs right now , I keep looking at how much petrol prices are rising week on week and can’t help but wonder how it’s possible to keep absorbing these costs. I’m definitely feeling the pinch

It's still a big hit however much you've got or haven't isn't it? Obviously is terrible if you have nothing, but the cost to people who have larger homes must be absolutely astronomical. Some of my friends have told me they've been given prices that are more than their mortgage. Let's hope it's a good summer!

Welcome, latecomer, to the party!

I'm terrified. Im scared to leave the house and go food shopping. I'm scared to use the gas and electricity when in the house. It's all making me really miserable to be honest!
I work full time but my income is low. It didn't stretch far enough before. Now it's making me feel sick. Everytime I go shopping I look at what I have, momentarily feel I've done really well cutting right back to be horrified when I get the cost at the till. Each month I give my meter readings. Again for a moment I'm like wow I've knocked over 150 units off this Mom across both G&E to receive the bill and it be pretty much my monthly payment. I am normally in hundreds of credit on my energy and have always used my heating etc without a second thought. I dont have credit on my account and we live in the dark and cold! I'm scared to use the car. I obsess over the fuel going down and I dread driving past a fuel station to find that diesel is still increasing despite the appalling 5p relief.
I know everyone is going through this but it's making me feel a failure that this is the life I'm giving my son. I've worked so hard over the last 8 years to keep our home despite being left in awful circumstances and debt by my DS dad who has disappeared. Now I fear I will lose everything I've worked hard to save

Babyroobs · 08/04/2022 21:14

Worried at the moment as I've been out of work for a few months, although I am hopefully starting a new job soon. I'm also feeling the cold hugely right now, possibly due to low iron levels and being at home in the day mean sometimes having to put the heating on. I just cannot get warm and it's miserable.
