Pension Carry Forward

Trying to figure this out and I think I'm being stupid I earn 40k and my employer contributes 10% into my pension and then I contribute another 10%.
When I am calculating carry forward left do I add the tax relief I get onto it? Or just use £8,000.
Hope someone knows more about this than I do I think I have royally confused myself.

If you are contributing £4000, it is usually £5,000 total invested after tax relief is added on. So I would say total £9k used up.
